You know like the new trucks. I was thinking about checking out the junk yards or a kit if there is one out there.

Thanks

:) There is a fella named Neil in the first gen that has one, however I don't think that they can now be found. I'm in if there are available! Tim

Tire Carrier

The tire carrier that was offered for our trucks is much different than the cable and winch type that is common now. The first one that I was made aware of, was advertised on an accesories poster for the Dakota, when it first came out. Bugged the parts department until they found the part number for the full size truck. The tire carrier has two arms that are pivoted on brackets that are bolted to the rear of the frame and pass either side of the tire. The wheel is supported by a cross piece that passes under it and is attached to the arms. The arms are driven by a worm and pinion and a removable crank handle is used to raise and lower the wheel. The wheel in the down position ends up partialy behind the bumper, so crawling under the truck is not required. The only problem with this unit is that it mounts on the lower rear frame area in the same position as a receiver hitch would. I wanted to have both, so ended up making my own receiver hitch that fit around the tire carrier and provided an access hole for the crank handle to pass through.

Junkyard Wars

Hey jjohn, I have been thinking the same thing. However, if it won't fit with the reciever hitch, well, I guess that I just have to make it work. I need to take a closer look at the one on dad's '96, see if I can tell anything. I'm tired to carrying around a theft-prone spare in the bed.

I am in if anyone can find a crankup unit for group purchase. My spare is chained down to my 5th/goose neck hitch:rolleyes: Since I installed a class 5 reese, my oem spare carrier won't work

Tire Carrier

Drives Mopars my tire carrier is of the same type as the one available for the dakota only it's a bit larger to fit the full size truck.

Part Number

Have been trying to find the receipt for the tire carrier but had no luck. Found two copies of the bill of sale for the truck from 91, but no other paperwork until 95:(, it may have been lost when I moved or just put away in a place so safe I can't find it!

Still Looking,

Neil:)

Thanks for the pics Neil

I cut out my OEM spare carrier when I replaced my springs last week. Yeterday bought some new treaded rod and nuts to put my spare back up until I get a replacement

"Yours looks sweet"... The old system... what a peice of junk! Bench press time on your back, trying to hold it up with one hand and get the nut started and up to the carrier. I still am going to see if the junk yard Idea will work, take some measurements etc. If that doesn't work out, i'm going your route. Is there a part number on the carrier itself?

Thanks again Jim

Yo Dieselman359, I'll let you know if i figure anything out in the bone yard.

:) Hey guys, I'm still in watching this to see if we can find one. This is a very heavy, aukward tire to access! Lets find something!!!:) :) :) Tim

Fjord carrier

I fount a crank up carrier at the junk yard off of a Fjord. It took some modification but works great. Back up close but not over tire, hook up cable, turn crank and tire is up under truck. I have carried the tire about 100k miles with no trouble. Ive onlu had too use it two or three times.

Good luck

Russ

Great! I hope someone can find something on the lift. Getting too old to manhandle the monster. Tried using one of the small floor jacks, but that is a hassle too.

The easiest way is to call Good Sam, but they can be slow showing up.

After seeing the pictures maybe we could make something similar and even put a motor on it. :D

Sounds like the answer! Thanks.

I'm off to the junk yard. :)

Just got back from the junk yard today and this cable crank system is completely doable. I looked at a 96 Dodge and a 97 Ford set up and will measure and see which one is right. Will keep you guys posted with the cure! Tim:) :) :) :)
