HAS ANYONE noticed if the 2005 ctd is noisier than the 2003/2004?

My 2005 was made september 2004. I have noticed that it has a tapping rattling sound coming from the engine with only 19k miles on it. I just changed the fuel filter, so it's not pump starvation. I idled it 15 feet from a 2004 model with the 305 horse/555 engine and the 04 has none of the rattly-tappy noise that sounds like a 1985 peterbuilt with an 855 cummins. What gives? I still have the stock intake tract! When I pulled apart the intake hoses, on both trucks, the intake silencer on the 04 was about an inch shorter(the coffee can with baffles and the cross shaped perforated divider)than the one on the 2005. I am disappointed! the 04 has 50k miles on it.

BBowers,

Does your engine sound like one, or more, of the injectors is not doing the pilot injection thing? Basically, do some of the injectors make the engine sound like one of the earlier, non-quiet engines?

If so, that sound is referred to as "injector knock". It's hard to get the dealer or DC to take care of it. I wasn't able to. However, I was able to fix it, on my own.

Some of us with similar problems have resorted to using fuel additives to take care of the problem. It takes awhile for the additives to work, also. Doesn't happen right away.

The most recent theory is that carbon builds-up on and in the injector tips and doesn't allow them to work properly. If you burn off the carbon with additives or driving the "crap" out of the truck, the problem seems to correct itself. At least, that's been my experience. Also, try not to idle the engine, too much. That's an easy way to build up carbon.

There are a number of threads on the 3rd Gen. Engine & Trans. forum devoted to the use of additives & lubricity. Check those out.

Filling the fuel filter housing with Seafoam and then running the truck is a quick way to clean the carbon off the injectors and combustion bowls in the pistons.

BBowers,

My buddy has an 05 and I have an 03. We noticed the same thing with his truck compared to mine. As you described it was rather loud and very noticeable. his has 12,000 miles and mine has 60,000. mine has an Afe intake and torque tube, MBRP exhaust, and a ramifier turned up all the way and sitting next to his you would think mine was not even running over the noise of his bone stock 05.

well, I guess that I will try using some additives. I already use MM oil and power svcs. white jug cetane booster. I am just thoroughly getting disgusted with this truck. It cost so much darn money and it is just a nightmare! 15,000 mile axle service, 3 gallons of synthetic oil at oil changes, noisy, the worst service I have ever had with a truck from the dealer. The list goes on!!! Bullydog originally told me I could program my auto shifting with a triple dog, then when I got it in the mail and found out it wouldnt they were like, "we didn't tell you that, all the guys here know it won't do that!" RIGHT!!! I was mainly after extra power and mileage anyway, so I let it go.

i don't have any of the third gens but i have noticed at fuel stops ill hear one roll up and its louder then it should be and walk inside and on parked by the curb is real quite both idling and theres a deffinate difference i don't what years or nothing. the first time i noticed it i thought maybe bad injectors on the loud one now im wondering.

Yep, my '05 with 15k miles is loud, and it doesn't sound very good either. I LOVED the sound of my 01. 5, and liked the way my '05 sounded for about... 1200 miles. Now it is has the injector knock when I put the truck in gear, and flat out sounds like s#!t when I really get on it going up a hill. I have tried the Seafoam in the filter housing and for a couple of tankfuls, but it only slightly worked for a few miles then went right back.

And we used to make fun of the 7. 3 for it's cackle...

Well if y'all want it to sound right, just get TSterner's P-Pump conversion when it comes out. You'll have nothing to complain about then, except for excessive smoke :D

And really, come on, diesels are noisy. Go get a Ford V-10 Gasser if you want quiet.

Do some bombing to your truck, you'll forget about noise.

I agree, pull up to a stoplight next to a tow truck with a 7. 3 in it and then you'll realize how quiet the 3rd gens are. I have a hard time hearing my motor over the rumbling of the str8 pipe.

We have an '01 7. 3 in my family that i see/hear everyday. My '05 sounds much worse.

Again, the issue isn't so much the amount of noise the '05 makes... but moreso the injector knock sound many '05's have which makes it loud. It is NOT a natural diesel sound, IMO.

I've got the rattly scrapy noise in mine. It's getting more noticeable at 14K. My buddies 04. 5 does it for a split second on acceleration, and then his goes away. Mine keeps on making that noise. It's kinda like scratching your nails on a chalkboard.

BBowers,

It sounds like you are already treating your fuel, enough. The Power Service should be plenty & the MMO is just an "insurance policy" to make sure you have enough additive.

The one thing that I noticed when starting to use an additive was that it took quite awhile (months) before it started to work. I took a trip, with my trailer, from Phoenix to Palmdale, CA. After the trip, I noticed the injector knock had stopped. However, it did come back, a little later. Then went away, again. Since then, I've started using MMO, on top of the Primrose 405.

The 15,000 mile gear oil changes, in my opinion, are overkill & probably designed to make extra money for the dealers when you choose to have them service the axles. However, the first gear oil change, I believe, is a good idea. Get all the wear-in junk out of the axles. DC charges an arm & a leg for their gear oil. It's relabeled Texaco gear oil. I called American Axle & spoke with them about the frequency of gear oil changes recommended by Dodge. They thought the first one was a good idea, also, but 35,000-40,000 mile intrevals, afterwards, should be fine.

If you are changing out your synthetic motor oil like you would a conventional motor oil, you are probably not getting bang for your buck. Many of the conventional oils, especially the CI-4+ rated, are very good & are approaching the level of synthetic quality. There are a number of Dodge/Cummins with a million+ miles on the engines, without a rebuild. And that's using earlier conventional oils that weren't as good as today's oils. Chevron Delo 400 is available through Costco for less than $43. 00/case. That's $21. 50/ oil change, for the oil, itself.

I had a used oil analysis done at my last change with 8303 on the Chev. Delo 400 & it still looked good to go. I know some people stretch it out even further.

I'm sorry to hear of your unhappiness with your truck. If you have the ability & time to do some of these services yourself, you will save quite a bit of money. At least the dealership won't be eating your wallet, alive.

I hope your luck with your truck changes in the future.

I second the fuel additive theory, although i use Howes. It did take awhile though I would say about 3-6 months for mine but now no more injector knock. I run synthetic oil, and just extend my oil changes, I also do it myself. One more note its a diesel and its suppose to make noise. ;)

Sometimes I think my 2005 is loud till I get in my buddies 2000. I forgot how much rattle was on my 2001 cummins. People go for a ride in my 2005 and can't believe it's a diesel under the hood. 20,000 trouble free miles so far. Oh bye the way I put 16ozs PS and 8ozs MMO in every tank. With are west coast low sulfer fuel I want the added protection.

My 2005 2500 4x4 CTD automatic developed an rattle at about 6000 miles. Mine does not make the sound when in park or neutral only forward or reverse gears. I've had 2 different dealers look at it and the response I keep getting is "normal for diesels" junk. The sound does seem to come and go, but has gotten pretty constant over the past couple of months at about 11k miles. My truck was built fall of 2004 also. The sound I hear is a fast rattling or tapping. If I rev the motor in park, everything sounds OK... much quiter than my old 1997 7. 3L Powerstroke. Does this sound like injector knock???
