HAS ANYONE noticed if the 2005 ctd is noisier than the 2003/2004?

Same here. My 05 was quiet as could be until about 5000 miles. Still does it at 24,0000 miles. I'm burning a high quality B20 fuel and it doesn't help. I ran my tank low and put 5 gallons of fuel in it with a couple cans of seafoam twice in a row and then drove the heck out of it. This seemed to help for a brief time maybe 500 miles after I did it. The truck was quiter and seemed peppier, but now it back the way it was, which is fine but iit makes me mad when I park beside my friends 03 305/555 and you can't hear his running over the noise mine makes. If I rev it to about a 1000 it's not as loud as it is at 650.

My 04. 5 seemed quiet at first but quickly got noisier and noisier. The dealer said it was diesel and normal. I won't argue the diesel point , but why did it get louder. I had my truck serviced and the sales dept. loaned me a 05 demo w/10000 mile and it was quiet as a diesel could be, asked the head tech and his comment was "they are all different. My 04. 5 ran good, consumed no oil and was fuel efficient.

By-pass the Dealers, and -

If you're really concerned - go to a Cummins facility,

ask the question - get a Cummins tech to listen to your

engine. [Decide ahead of time if you will pay - half-hour,

or hour labor - for the privledge . . . if they want to charge

you for their opinion. ]

Be up front - tell 'em you just want an opinion (and why),

no work performed (as I've heard they won't work on late model

Dodge anyway).

THEN - pliz come back and post with the result!

Run the crap out of it... . take it on a nice 20 mile high speed run (be safe of course)... . with some brisk accelleration and some high rpm time... ...

Every time I go to Australia (2-5 weeks per trip)... . my wife drives my truck on short (grocery getting) trips and she isnt too good at getting her warmed up, cooling her down, and she drives it like a wimp..... when I get back from my trip, the thing just doesnt sound nor feel right... . I give them both a good working over for 20 minutes and all's back to normal! :)

I have never used additives... . 20k on the clock.

I think my '05 has that tickin' sound so many of you are talking about. Kind of like a 1/4" ratchet being reversed, maybe a tad higher pitched, but it keeps time with the engine speed (idle only). Not quite 12k miles yet. Been there since about 4-5k miles. It is not there when it is cold, but if I drive 5+ miles, it is there when the motor returns to idle. It does not seem to matter if the oil pressure is up (not to operating temp) or lower pressure (when near 200 F). Kinda makes me think it is not valvetrain and probably injector(s) (maybe pump?). If I get more than 20 ft. away from the vehicle, it is pretty much all I hear. Not terribly loud but annoying and starting to concern me. I don't remember hearing it when it was new. I still consider myself a newbie. I bought my first diesel Feb. 2005. I think the build date was Nov. '04. I am an ASE certified master mech. , but I do not practice. Not too rusty yet. I did some light wrenching/maintenance on J. D. 's, CAT's, Detroit Diesels on my Unc's farm a few summers back. This is definitely not the common diesel knock. Also, there is a Detroit Diesel/Cummins service center about 15 mi. from where I live. If I get a chance to stop by and ask them, I will post a response. This is why I joined TDR. A wealth of info to read and learn. Thanks.

Mine started to tick a little about a month ago just prior to my annual trek to Arizona. After towing a heavy fifth wheel 1800 miles it's quiet again. I think these engines need to be worked to keep the injectors clean. I use Power Service in every tank but that didn't prevent the tick from starting. Hitch your truck up to something heavy and I'll bet it quiets down afterwards.

broeser340,

I think Dieselnerd may be right. My injector knock went away after a good trip to CA. but, it came back awhile later.

I think carbon build-up on and maybe inside the injector tips may be causing this problem. If you can't drive your truck hard all the time, using an additive may help. You should be running an additive, anyway, for the added lubricity.

Since I've been running the Primrose 405 & MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil), the knock has gone away & stayed away. It seems to work. For me, at least. (Read my earlier post. ) However, using just the Primrose 405, it took quite awhile to correct the problem.

Good Luck.

How about using a bit of Techron injector cleaner. That should do it then maintain it with Stanadyne or PS and a lubricity additive

on edit: the thing that drives me nuts is the turbo wastegate noise while she's running down the road, goes away on acceleration, returns when the boost goes down

Hate that sound like somone jingling coins

Are you guys using marvel mystery oil to enhance lubricity?? Are you mixing according to MMO's or others reccomendation or a little extra. Thanks for the responses.

Mine had the injector knock... gave it a strong dose of PS and MMO. It went away while running the first tank. I'm using Stanadyne now to keep everything clean. Note that I probably went overboard with the PS and MMO. It turned cold and I had about 4 days of harder starting and significant white smoke on start. The starting issues went away when I refilled without the PS and MMO. It could have been some other issue, but it did match up with the treatment.

I was accelerating today, and I noticed that "rachet" sound, so I took Giachino's advice and floored it on the highway. I had an open stretch, so I took it to the limit..... 107MPH????? Wouldn't go any faster. Good news is the truck really got quiet after that and sounds like it did, when I first bought it (I now have 13,200 miles). So stupid question time: Do these trucks have speed limiters on them? If so, how do you disable it?

My 2006 CTD has developed the ticking noise over the last 5,000 miles. I am on a 5,000 mile cross country trip pulling a 12,000 lb Cardinal fiver. The noise started just before I left home. It was a subtle spark-knock like sound. Now after pulling my camper for 4,000 miles at speeds averaging 65mph, the ticking noise has become a loud rattle that is present at most speeds and rpm levels. It is much louder when cold and under acceleration under load.

I have been using mostly ULSD and have only added PS a couple of times. I am afraid the dealer will tell me that this is normal. I say rubbish. I had a 1999 24v CTD, and after that had a 2002 Duramax/Alli. Neither of these trucks developed weird noises.

I can't say I haven't driven the truck hard. I don't think carbon is the problem. Considering these conditions, Do any of you have any ideas what I should do to correct this annoying condition?? Or more importantly, will this loud rattle result more significant issues or damage to the drivetrain??

I am on my way home to Michigan and have about 1,500 miles to go. Should I drive a certain way, limit my speeds, or start using additional PS??

Thanks, Chuck

Running the truck to its top speed doesn't get you what you want. Lock it in whatever gear is direct for your transmission, or lower if you want. Put your foot on the floor and leave it there until the truck quits accelerating and then maybe a few seconds more. Ignore the tach if you can't stand to see it go that high. Your truck will run better.

These truck were built to tow something. You can't get it hot enough for long enough w/o a trailer. Obviously I'm talkin' stock here.

Yes, approx 107mph as you saw... . and i dont think there's a way to disable as of yet... . In my case, i'm waiting for marco to add it to a future smarty software... .
