My 1990 passed easily four years ago but just barely two years ago. Next test in about six months. http://emissiontestwa.com/faq.aspx#7 describes the test. The door jamb says GVWR is 08510 so my truck must pass:

"1982 and newer diesel vehicles over 8500 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). These vehicles will receive a snap acceleration test.

The vehicle exhaust's density (opacity) will be measured as it exits the vehicle's tailpipe. The vehicle will not be driven on a dynamometer. The motorist will be instructed to reach required RPM levels while the vehicle idles in park or neutral (depending on the transmission or model-year type of vehicle). tested. "

My truck hardly smokes unless I intentionally jam the throttle to make smoke as I must do for the test. Does not make sense to me. Dale

Just an idea

A 1992 truck is 15 years old. Does this qualify in your state for Classic or Antique tags? I know in Pennsylvania any vehicle 15 years old, or no longer manufactured is allowed to run a Classic Vehicle Tag. A vehicle 25 years or older is allowed to run an Antique Tag. Using this type of registration "tag" makes the vehicle EXEMPT from all emissions nonsense. :D These special tags also GREATLY reduce your insurance rates.

They drop your insurance rates because they limit the miles you can drive. Usually 5k or less. The antique plate also may subject you to being pulled over more if you drive during rush hour since you are probably not using the vehicle for "parade or educational use". NJ's law is 25 years or older. The sharp call here is regular insurance and antique plates.

My wifes 1974 corvette is $225 a year no matter how many miles we drive because it is a classic over 15 years here . Haggerty ins great people

Took my Dodge through emission friday. Using the controlled smash on the the throttle my reading was 13 out of 40. Had to do it twice. I'm assuming I was too slow on the pedal, but did get a good reading. As long as the state lets me push on the pedal I figure I can pass that test for a long time to come.

Good News! Just passed my Snap Test. 14 with a limit of 55. Didn't add anything to the fuel or adjusted anything only snapped! a lot gentler than two years ago.

Now I am good to go for two more years. Thanks for the help everyone. Dale

I work at a Biomass power plant here in Calif. Our opacity limit is 20%, which is monitored 24/7. I have seen 20% opacity and it is very noticable. 40% has got to be alot of smoke. I'm not sure it would block out the sun, but it would be alot of smoke, enough to make me worry about what my motor was doing. I just can't imagine a stock truck making 20% let alone 40.

They want to stomp it but you just lean into it. Been doing it here in Wa for LONG time. The other thing to check before you do it is check ALL of your boost clamps and the should be at 95" lbs. Even though they look tight they probably loose. I tighten mine every 3 weeks and are loose.

Have had members up here blow a 59:eek: Or pass with a good number and then pulling out they black out the station:-laf

Don't know if it's needed to run full bio but all the trucks in area I'm talking about are not at all stock. I blew a 9 with with comp on 1-1 and Dons 2+. Before you go in do some practicing to lean into the go pedal.

I do emission tests here in NY for commercial trucks 8501 Lbs and up gvwr. . 40% is not a alot of smoke in my opinion and as a snap test 40% is just the intitial puff before the boost sets in any how. . I don't like these tests etc as the truck can run clean 90% of the time especially with the right driver . . but still fail a test . . Most of the pickups at our get to togethers would fail. . new electronic cat engines ie a 2001 550 is pretty close to 30 percent. . newer macks even the electronics fail often. . the older mechanical macks . . fail alot unless they are cut back so much that they are worthless to drive. . etc. . so far most of the testing is focused on big trucks and not pickups yet... . \

oh in NY the operator does the test roadside you have to smash the idle pedal down as a fast as you can . . otherwise its invalid test etc. . all acessories are off . ie jake ,air brakes released - wheels chocked, ac off, air up, ie no load on engine etc. . engine has to be fully warmed up etc you get a few clean out / practice tests then the meter is put in the exhaust... if the operator is slow on the pedal, he has to speed it up or the test has to be repeated. . etc so you can't baby it... you fail auomatically if you have no governor, if you have a exhaust leak it fails automatically etc. .

NYS limits they go by the engine year so if you have a 2006 truck (glider) with a 1968 12v71 in it you would be tested at a the 70% opacity etc etc

1974 - 1990 : 55

1991 and Newer : 40

In NY these trucks are subject to random roadside tests. . and in southern NY a yearly emission test is needed to pass inspection
