Has anyone put side pipes on their truck?

im not sure of anyone who makes a sidepipe kit. i know there was a yellow PSD in the Diesel Power magazine that had side pipes, and it looked really good. i saw a pic of a 1st gen with sidepipes here on the tdr...

I have pictues of a black dually at TIM 04 that had some at home. I've seen a web site listing sidepipes but I can't think of it right now.

The sidepipes look pretty cool, but the downside is cleaning soot off the wheels.

Old muffler shop owner here. All automotive side pipes I have seen have only a 1 3/4 inch core... 2 inch max. Even with two of them, they would be VERY restrictive for the CTD. IF you go with side pipes, make sure they have big enough cores to flow well enough for your motor!

I had side pipes on my 66 Coronet in college. Looked great, but you couldn't sit at a stop light with the windows open without getting a lot of exhaust. Of course that car was shorter then these trucks so maybe it wouldn't be an issue.

Like I said, just make sure they have big enough cores for the CTD. If those are straights... basically stacks laid down, they would flow fine. If there are little cores inside, they could be restrictive. I was just voicing a concern.



How hot do they get? There are no heat shields. I have never been around a set of stacks or side pipes on the CTD.

A few months ago on the main drag by the Chrysler transmission plants in Kokomo, Indiana there was a 3G with a large chrome side pipe on the passenger side. I don't think it went all the way back to the rear wheel like in the pictures. IIRC it stopped after the cab and was angled down somewhat instead of straight out. Didn't see if he had one on the drivers side. Looked awesome and sounded great too. Definitely and cool alternative to stacks in the bed. Though like Steve I wonder how hot they get.

Those look cool, especially the 2nd and 3rd gen dually pics. You know, if you did them right, with enough space away from the cab, you could fab up some brackets and put an expanded steel step on them. The brackets would be up a few inches from the pipe, therefore not conducting a lot of heat. The expanded steel would give you a grip, without using anything that would melt. Just don't get to high EGTs then stand on the steps for any longer than it takes to get in the cab!

i'd be like getting used to a set of stacks... it too me a while but now i'll never go back to a single tip out the back. i like it because it gives a nastalgic look to the truck.....

Reminds me of full nerf bars in a way. Wonder what would happen if someone stepped on them? I like the idea of a step or something around them at some point, but I wonder if that would hide or take away the effect of the looks of them.



I've thought about getting stacks, but then have pondered the idea of a toolbox as well. I'm not big on the look with the stacks, then the toolbox put behind the stacks. I wonder if a guy could buy a 5th wheel style toolbox to fit in between the stacks, or else off to the side if you would only run one. Any ideas on that?

I saw a PSD running down the highway around here and he had side pipes with the steps you guys suggested. I have searched for them for a while now and can't find them anywhere on the web. Must have been custom made. They looked very nice and in the winter, snow and ice wouldn't collect on them either!

I've thought about getting stacks, but then have pondered the idea of a toolbox as well. I'm not big on the look with the stacks, then the toolbox put behind the stacks.

I was kind of worried about that myself. I'm going to make a diamond plate cover that covers the "dead space" from rail to rail and the front to the edge of a fuel/toolbox tank with 2 snug holes for the stacks to go through. I think it will be pretty seemless.



I havent got the tank yet but I couldnt be happier with the stacks!

I think something (toolbox/tank) that would be level with the bed rails would look good because you couldn't hardly tell it was there. I just don't like the looks of the over-the-bed rails toolbox that sits back from the front of the bed when stacks are used. I've been thinking about putting a fifth wheel box in the front, so I may not even put stacks on. I'm starting to think that the exhaust works the way it is, so that's fine. And I like hearing the echo off of things when driving around, so that works out good.



Where were the steps put on, on that PSD? Over or under the pipes? I would think that there would be a big problem with snow and ice (just like the running boards and rocker panels get in winter), unless there would be enough exhaust heat to melt it. Still would be hard to keep clean though.
