I had an ARP 12mm stud snap in two pieces on me the other day.

I dont know what caused it to break. I was driving easy when it happen, luckily the one that broke was not under the valve cover. When it broke I heard it slam the hood. It even left a small dent in the hood.

I got the kit about a 1 1/2 years ago. I called up ARP and they sent me a new stud and want the broken one back so they could take a look at it. There customer service was great!

Here are a few pics of the stud.

That stud has been fractured for a long time. It was being held together by only about 40% of the material when it finally let go.

They were torqued at 125 ft. lbs. I went through 3 cycles and then set on the 4th time. I also use the ARP lube that they send. It takes a while to set them up the first time. I also use a new Snapon electronic torque wrench that I had gotten just for that job.

I have heard from a few different people that the A1 studs resist corrosion better than the ARP studs which from what I have seen are always badly rust pitted. I also know of 1 engine where the stud rusted in and upon removal broke a chunk out of the rear corner of the block.

Just spit balling here, but the stud looks very corroded and pitted. Could it have been bad stud to begin with or some kind of a leak that weakened it?

Just looks like it is in real bad shape for only being 1. 5 years old.

Just a thought,

sory about not posting for a while, i wasnt able to get to my computer.

Im not sure what caused the stud to rust like that. I did pop a head gasket about 10 months ago. But it only leaked oil out the very front of the head. When I pulled off the head I dont remember any rust being on any of the studs. The one that broke was beside the exhaust I dont know if the heat had anything to do with it or not.
