Now that I see Dodge is going even bigger with hp and torque in the new Cummins I feel its time to do the performance chip on my 03 California diesel. Would like to get some feedback from any of you that have installed and used these products and what kind of reliability and performance they really do offer. I plan on doing quite a bit of traveling pulling my 5er and don't want to give up reliability to gain performance.

Put in the Edge EZ about 4 months ago, the performance gain was very noticeable. I haul for a living and have put almost 39k miles on it since then. No problems at all. I am approaching 89k miles. I run on level 4.

As I understand it,

Injectors are suppose to be less stress on the VP than anything that "taps the pump wire".

I went with larger injectors and a Edge Comp but did not tap the pump wire. I use the Comp like an EZ that I can turn off from the cab.

Taping the pump wire will "make you your own warantee station" for the VP. The VP pump wires are carefully visually inspected by the dealer and Bosch and if there was an indication of a tap it will NOT be warranteed.

Just be sure of all the ramifications as you proceed.

I just got my 5er (13k) yesterday and it pulled fine in flat central florida, 3. 54, O/D out, 2500 rpm, 60mph, <1200*, ~ 8 - 12 #, good torque, 150* transmission (hot line, pan) with Smart Controller in lockup, exhaust brake worked fine.

It is a system, just look at it as a system and you'll be fine.

this would one of my major concerns.

being that I'm traveling and would not be at my local dealer also adds to the confusion.

I wonder what the maximum power setting is or H. P. rating a guy could go with without raising his EGTs to high when towing over hills?

Can a guy towing with a performance chip with say auto transmission smoke his engine on a hill?

I personally have to turn my box off when towing, but have other mods as well.

Some chips do not turn off.

If I read your first post right, you have a 2003. The EZ on a 03 does not tap any wire, it just plugs in and it does not throw any codes. The only way the dealer would know is if you went there with it still plugged in. I now have over 39000 miles on mine. No codes, no problems.

Thanks EB for the update. By the way on the guages are they a pita to install and which one do you run?

I'm pulling a fifth wheel that weighs 10,500 lbs on its axles and 3000 lbs at the hitch pin, I have a 4. 10 rear end and just ran from San Diego to Montana without a problem but really want to up the hp and torgue a bit so I don't have to make to many speed runs before I hit a grade. :)
