i am selling the 2003! so i will be hanging around this board alot more in the future i came on 2 years ago as a 99 owner then got the itch to buy an 03 now i am getting a company car and want to get the best diesel engine ever put in a production 1 ton truck the 96-98. 4 12v. i have found many 3500 for good prices so i am not worried about that i am trying to figure out how i will bomb this thing once i get it and how much it will cost. i will run empty mostly. i will be pulling a 9000k dozer and 4000k trailer @ (13k) 0-350 sea level and flat ground. i want this truck to be the equiv of dd2's,hx40, drag comp in 24v's. what do i need to do?

1. kill the dowel pin ( i will need the kit and instructions)

2. gauges-got them!

3. exhaust-$300

4. 370's or? price?

5. 11 or 10 plate price? $100?

6. timing? (how to adjust)

7. hx40 or hybrid 35 ($635 for hybrid)

8. ats manifold ($300)

because of money constaints i will need to bomb in order so what can i do to do it right the 1st time in progression?

final question: is it really that important to get 96-98. 5 with the larger delivery valves if i found a 95 what would be the d/f in bombing?

Well, you can delay the exhaust - both the pipe and the manifold. You won't gain hp from the exhaust until you've brought it to 300 hp or so and the manifold isn't much help unless the OEM manifold is shrunken enough to impede the flow of #1 or #6.

You didn't say auto or stick but both plates that you mention will cook a weak (with milage) auto and probably take out a stock clutch. So you'll want to get your power path to the wheels ready first thing.

Try to start with the 5 speed & 215hp pump ... very sensitive to fueling mods. Oo. The 215hp versions come with bigger injectors too.

Ck out this link. You can see just how much more power the 215 pump makes for a given plate.

It's a fun exercise to extrapolate out the "NR" ratings, if you were to put an #8, 6 or 5 into a 215 pump. Not to mention what happens when you put in a #4 or #0. :--) Hello EGT
