Want to find out the incidence of turbo failure, especially modified (machined, clipped, trimmed, chopped, diced, sliced, or barbecued). So if you have experienced a turbo failure, please post a brief message about it. I'd like to see if turbo modifications of any kind make them more likely to fail - as they seem to from reading the TDR.

I had three on my '95. All turbos stock. The first one had bearing noise. The replacement did not get oiled by the mechanic, 500 miles and that one fried the bearings. The third went with no problem till I sold it.

Turbo failures

We lost a stock turbo at 120,000 miles on our '93 cummins after a dirty air filter allowed some sand in and damaged the compressor wheel. The damaged wheel was now unbalanced and ruined the bearings in no time. Bad bearings allowed the compressor wheel to get into the compressor housing and ruin the entire unit.

My truck still has the stock HX-35, but it is on its last leg. It has seen 46 psi boost several times and still sees over 1500° exh. temp. several times a week. The turbo has really went downhill the last month. My spoolup time is much longer than normal. My peak boost is only 32 psi. Pulling trailers @ 2000 rpm, the exh temperature will get up to 1100° and the turbo will only be producing 8 psi of boost. Going on vacation tomorrow. I don't know how much longer she's going to hold out.

Minor Turbo Problem?

Not sure if a turbo problem can be minor. A turbo is either working... . or its broke. I read an entire book on Turbos this week since I have been stuck is the wonderful land of JURY DUTY until today. Most minor problems, like a seal leak require a rebuild anyways. Just thought I would throw that out there :)

Clark, what I had in mind here were signs and symptoms of improper operation that may have been leading to a failure when they were corrected. By failure, I mean the kind that happens more or less abruptly and completely. Hope this helps clarify what I'm asking here. Just trying to get a handle on the frequency of turbo failures and if the modified turbos are failing at a substantially higher rate than the stock ones.

My 2000 is going in for a turbo soon, as the wastegate froze up. went from 19-20 p. s. i to 28-29 p. s. i. , and the truck is stock, well maybe a little rv injector or two, but that is it. Unknown why the failure, but I had a tech from the diesel lab at Jeep / Truck Engineering look at it, and he confirmed, the wastegate not working. Of course the dealer will not take my word for it, and want thier "diesel" mechanic, who went to a couple of schools to look at it first before ordering in a new turbo. Hopefuly he can do a simple R&R on the turbo without messing it up.

I will be installing a Piers modified HX35 tomorrow. Time will tell. I will pay the core charge and keep my HX35 for a spare. A busted turbo is a lot of work to replace. You have to inspect the intake manifold for metal, wash tubes and boots, wash intercooler before installing replacement. If metal in intake then it is probably overhaul time.

I know I'm out of my "area" but my '89 has the stock turbo, not sure on the model in that year... . But anyway, bombed and without an intercooler have hit 1250 lots, turbo clearances are still like new and it runs like the day I bought it. Seems tough to me...

Well, since I can't change my vote, I'll have to do it here. Had a stock HX40 go south on me yesterday after just under 4 months operation and about 3000 miles. I posted all the specifics in another thread in this forum.

Nope.

I had 110,000 miles on the 92 Cummins when I sold it... still ran perfect.

I had about 30,000 on the 99 when I changed to a Banks exhaust housing. I have about 8,00 miles on it.
