no. dodge - nv 5600

ford - german built zf 6 speed. ford has had numerous problems with these boxes in the past. the zf 5 speed was worse. i know as ive owned 3 and had trouble with 2.

the nv 5600 is 100 lbs heavier and much beefier and a dependable box, although a slow box to shift. has really beefy parts inside and a beefy case. gear oil instead of atf filled like the fords and less overheating problems.

Update

Well all,my brother bought a Ford Crew Cab 4x4,Powerstroke,and the hole package,he got the Ford because he believes he will get better warranty support through Ford, and he saw a lot on here about the VP44 pump problems and didn't want to get caught with a downed truck that DC won't fix,so we will see how long it holds up. .

I also am in the unique situation of having a PSD and a CTD to drive and compare. Well actualy I could do a comparison if the PSD would run!

Since purchasing the PSD new in October of 2000 it has had the following repaired (mileage is aproximate).

7500 miles; new turbo

8000 miles; new rear ring and pinion and L. S.

8500 miles ; new rear ring and pinion and L. S. again!

13,500 miles; new clutch, complete assembly

19,000 miles; new clutch complete assembly

19,005 miles; back in for another clutch

It still is sitting after two weeks of phone calls. Ford is trying to determine how to repair properly. The dealer has given up and Ford Customer Service keeps sending me back to the dealer.

I'd say the CTD is superior. I have put 10,000 miles on in 3 months and it purrs. 17 mpg at 80 mph and it seems to just get better with time.

1999

I had a 99 Superduty,I put 120,000 miles on it trouble free, never touched it,except for tires and a cup holder,I think it was a great truck, but I also think both are great trucks,I think you can get a bad one in everything you buy.

I know a fella that has had the same problems as you,but he finally got a new truck an even swap, and it has been trouble free for quite a while now, hopefully you will get that kind of service:)

As for engines, this 5. 9 Cummins is great. It will outlast anything out there, and due to less parts (V8-I6) its less money to rebuild one. The horsepower possabilitys for Cummins is greater. The fuel economy is better (again V8-I6). The torque output on an inline is greater than a V configuration.

As for truck body, thats a personal choice. Ford has a neat truck, so does Dodge.

Yes, a lot of the loco engines and big industrial engines are V configuration. Same with power generation and marine engines. However, this has nothing to do with the"which is better, an inline or V" debate. It is because it would be very hard if not impossible to make an inline 12, 16 or 20 cylinder engine that would hold work in the confines of the spaces provided. Another reason, once you get to a certain length on cranks and cams, the control limits must get tighter and tighter.

my .02

My '89 F250 4x4 never gave me a lick of trouble in 230K. This included plowing, towing horses (4), and a 32 foot travel trailer. Unlaiden it always seemed to give me 17. 3 mpg. ALWAYS! Towing was 10-11. It was a great amazing truck. It was just normally asperated and didn't make enough power to hurt it's self! After 5 years I called a buddy and told him I finally turbo the Ford. He asked which aftermarket turbo did I go with, I said Cummins!!! I bought a 5spd '95 2WD 3500. What a rocket ship after that Ford. Now I have my '01. 5 - You guys can bomb all you want, I just drive around pretending I have the fastest hottrodded 89 Ford around!

That truck (ford) and I parted friends though. It was a great truck. It was no Dodge with a CTD though!!!!!!!!!! :D
