Ok guys, I know I should know the answer to this but I just can't seem to figure it out.

I installed my 370's, and 191's tonight. First off, let me say I probably shouldn't have been working on it tonight, due to being on some medication so maybe I just didn't do something right. But I needed to get this done today.

I started it up after bleeding the lines at the inj. 's and she idled fine, I came inside and showered and cleaned myself up while it warmed up to operating temps. Then took it for a test drive, driving extremely easy on it and didn't get 1/2 a mile down the road and noticed a slight chatter, well i gave it another mile or so, and noticed it becoming more pronouced. I figured it was just that I hadn't bled it thoroughly enough. So I brought it back home and opened the lines again and got good fuel out of all of them. So I made sure my return line screws were tight (not to tight ofcoarse) and I was good there. Then almost immediataly it started 'chatter' really bad, I mean pretty bad, so I shut it down. I have not investigated any further as it was already 1230 and I am sure my neighbors were not happy about that at all.

So here is what I am thinking, maybe I don't have the inj. torqued enough, i set the gland nut to 55 lbs. or here is the good one, I am almost thinking I have the DV's in upside down. I know the inner part is right but for some stupid reason when I took them out of the old 3500 I couldn't remember if the lip on the outer piece went up or down, meaning does it sit on the bottome of the barrel or should it be towards the top? Other than that I am out of ideas, and could really use some direction to start looking at in the morning. I need to get this thing back up and running quickly.

TIA

Russell

Make sure that your DV's are installed corectally. Shim first, then DV seat (lip down), then DV, the spring seats on top of the DV, and the cone on top of the spring. Torque the holders to 89lb/ft. Be sure that the O-ring isn't too far down the threads or it will get chewed up when torqueing, and creat a leak.

Mike

there's a machined beveled edge on the DV seat that matches an edge on the DV... that edge isn't on the other side. that's how I remembered when I had them out!

Forrest

Ok so my dv's are in the right way, I am safe there. I am just going to run through things this morning with good clear head and with daylight not spotlight...

Ok, I have run through everything. I have pulled the inj. 3 times, the dv 2 now. Everything is in properly and torqued properly. There is no air left in the lines. There is not a bad inj. I have shut the fuel off to each one individually and you can hear the cyl. 'shut down'. I still have the tick or chatter what ever you might call it. It picks up with the throttle and seems to carry speed with it. Unfortuneatly I don't have time to keep playing with it. I was supposed to be in KC in 30 min. kinda hard to do when its 3 1/2 hrs away. I am hoping that maybe I have air trapped in the inj or something. So I am going to drive it easily back to KC and see if it clears up.

P. S. Thanks to those of you who I called on Sat. morning for help, I know thats not your idea of a good Sat morning, to here from some idiot in KS who builds diesels for a living and can't seem to figure out whats wrong with his own truck. . LOL

Is it running good now? Is the 'tick/chatter' the only complaint you have? The tick/chatter sound you are hearing could just be the normal operation of the injectors. Some types are louder than others.

Mike

It could be your lift pump making noise. I would put some miles on it and see if it gets better or worse. I would also top off the tank and see if that makes any difference.

My LP would make noise when there was vaccume building up in the tank. I fixed that problem and ever since then my LP has been quiet.

Just a thought.

Hey Russ, the overflow valve and lift pump are less than 4 months old on that truck just so you know.

OF Valve came from Precision Diesel

Lift pump came from US Diesel Parts

My overflow valve ticks all the time. The pump makes a chatter with my l/c dvs. Have you ever heard a p7100 on a pump stand? Very loud!

Russell,

I don't think you have to worry about air in the high pressure lines for a P7100 pump. I had mine off a while back to remove the ugly chipped paint. I cleaned them up really well so they look pretty good now (thanks for the idea Brad) and put them back on. The owner's manual says that if you run out of fuel you don't have to bleed the lines so I decided to give that a try. I didn't even attempt to bleed them. It started after some cranking. Lots of rock and roll at first. Then it smoothed out just fine.

I think Brad is right (he usually is), it's just normal pump noise with those delivery valves.

Back from KC. It has run for about 500 miles now. The loud Chatter that I was afraid of has seemed to go away. So I am of the opinion that it was just brand new inj. gettting seated and opened up. There is a 'tick' noise that was not there before, that doesn't seem to be related to the upgrades I did the other day, but I had not noticed it before I put them in. And I pay extreme attention to all noises that my engines make at all times. The tick is pretty fast as far as number of times it's "ticking' but it doesnt seem to be related to engine RPM, but as far as the trucks performance... . LOL... She got her first midwest victim in KC yesterday, you will have to read the story over in the Smoke Stories thread if I can find it to ressurect it.

But thanks to all who replied, I think I was worried over nothing. I had just no idea what was wrong, and I have had that combination in my 1 ton before and never had nothing like it. So I was concerned.

THANKS ALL

Russell
