FAST, cheap, and easy!

A resentful swipe at Big Oil.

Coasty,

Rust is only a problem if you live near the beach, or go to the beach and don't hose down your vehicle with fresh water when you get back home. My '96 just has a tiny bit of rust in front of the driver's door. My '01 Dodge has no rust.

Housing is very expensive in most areas. The median house price on Oahu last month was $640,000. Up from the previous record set in August which was $625,000. Where I live in Kailua 96734, median house price is $1. 1 million. My house was appraised in August for refinancing to build a new house. I have an old 1400 sq. ft. 3 bedroom/1. 5 bath single wall construction

with a 1 car garage sitting on 7500 sq. foot lot. The house was built in 1962. It was appraised for $700,000. I bought this house in 1993 for $340K and I would not be able to afford a house today.

I pick up the blueprints for our new house from the architech today. My new house will have a garage 40 ft. wide and 24 ft. long, with a 19 ft. high ceiling over a 15 ft. wide stall with a 15K vehicle hoist. The rest of the garage will have 12 ft. high ceilings. I don't care about the rest of the house... that's my wife's thing.

I just read your post and it really answered a lot of my questions. I was thinking of selling the truck because I wouldn't want it to rust away while we're there. Do you keep your trucks in a garage now?

By the sounds of your new house, you should have plenty of room for them. Are you tearing down your old house and building the new one on the same site or did you buy some other land? A big garage is a must for me and what your building sounds awesome. It looks like you bought at the right time as far as your house goes. I don't know if we'll buy yet or not. I hate to buy a house when the housing market seems like it's a sellers market. I see you live on Maui, I'm going to be on Oahu but I'm sure the housing market is the same there. I was looking at where you live on the map and I wonder what the heck you do for work, it seems your quite a ways from a big town, is that true? It must be beautiful there since you have the Koolau Forest Reserve behind you and the beach in front of you.

Coasty,

I am on Oahu. Maui house prices are even higher. I think their median price last month was like $739K. I am tearing down the old house and building new. My poor trucks sit outside because my present garage is too small. My wife's minivan sits in there. Really looking forward to my new garage, where I don't have to work on my vehicles in the hot sun and then start packing up everything when it starts to rain. Weather changes real fast here. You can have a cloudless sky and two hours later it is raining.

I am self employed... . tree service contractor. Tons of work, overbooked most of the time.

Sorry about that, I saw a Kailua on Maui's northeast coast and thought that was it. I see your by Kaneohe air station now that I looked closer at the map. Do you get more rain on your side of the island than the southwest side by Barbers Point?

The more we look at the move to Hawaii, the more we look forward to it. The biggest problem will be finding a house to live in. If we decide to buy, it will be atleast a month before we could close on the house and that's on top of however long it takes to find one. I'm going to go sleep on the beach...

Hawaii has some sweeeet CTDs! My parents own a drywall company in Kona. CTDs out number Fords and chevys. I miss my truck when I'm out there. In Kona, they don't mess around when it comes to custom trucks. :D

Ethanol in Hawaii

There are a number of ethanol projects in play right now, to utilize waste (or even artificially generated) sugar cane production by-products as additives for gasoline. There is a legal requirement in Hawaii (and nowhere else, as far as I know) to have gasoline fuels contain 10% ethanol by April, 2006. If this rule takes effect then diesel might become more attractive. (Thank the corn and sugar lobby). The two largest players (Tesero Hawaii, Chevron) have expressed opposition to this ruling, but I am not aware of any challenges that have survived court action at this point.

AV8TR,

Aloha Kama' aina! I was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay for 2 years and the DAY my truck arrived on the ship I had an offer to sell it from a lady that worked for Parker Ranch on the Big Island, there are a LOT of CTD's running around Hawaii pulling cattle and what not!

Fuel wise, I found the best price for diesel, BY FAR was to drive to schofield barracks (the only base on Oahu that sold diesel as of spring '04 when I left) and buy it there. It was consistently $. 35/a GALLON cheaper than out in town. It is a bit of a drive, but if you make a trip of it and stop by the Pearl Harbor NEX or something like that it makes it a nice little trip, besides there is nothing like blasting over the H-3 in a CTD while everyone else is struggling to climb that mountain!

If you need a good place to stay while you are house hunting try the Hale Koa, its right on the strip in Waikiki, and serves military and DOD employees only, great rates, great location, great food and a great bare foot bar right on the beach. Also if you need a place to stay you could try the Navy lodge on Kaneohe Bay, they have beach front cottages for the same rates as their little hotel rooms, and they are awesome!

Not sure if you are already in Hawaii or not, I just saw this thread and figured I would throw in my $. 10 worth!

Good luck, and if you need any more info just shoot me a message!

I have a timeshare on Maui, and always wondered if the tree service business was big. Everything is always growing hell bent, I figured lawn service and tree service would be a big thing.
