98 24 valve overheating in stop and go traffic in B'ham, 93 degrees, pulling 10K fifth wheel. Fan clutch( original) with 170K miles not working so I put new Hayden, part number 02798, on. Guess what. It doesn'work either!! Temp goes over center mark a bout 1/8 inch. Any suggestions? At what temp is this thing supposed to lock in? Website says 170. that is BS.

Take Hayden back for refund. Go to dealer and get OE. Don't know if it is availabe through Cummins. Have not had good results with aftermarket clutches. OE costs more but works. My . 02.

tmarti96,

I recently went through this with my 95', and wound up buying a NAPA heavy duty, part #272313, for about $135. Works great.

Be advised, if you go OEM, you need to buy the fan and clutch for 94 and 95's. They no longer make/stock the old style clutch. Cummins couldn't help either; said it was a Dodge supplied part.

FWIW

Just installed a Hayden Fan clutch because of a similar problem. My problem has been solved. The Hayden clutch is a little smaller than the OEM, not sure why. Wonder if the idea is for it to spin faster thus more cooling. Anyway all is good now. Took about 5 minutes and one busted knuckle too install. Spent more time cleaning the radiator and finding a band-aid than actually installing the clutch. Was surprised at the amount of crud that came from the radiator. Is your fan damaged? I think an out of balance fan will ruin a fan clutch.
