My tansfer case is shot so I need a new one. The one I was going to get had already been sold but he said that he would sell me a HD NP tranfer case with a PTO on it. Will it bolt up to the back of my transmission like the OEM would? Thanks for the help.

Transfer case options

The 95s had a New Venture Gear NV-241 on the 2500's or a 241HD on 3500s (could be ordered as an option on the 2500s in 97 anyway). You can get one from a junkyard or try Blumenthals. They sell them new and rebuilt I think. How did you ruin your transfer case? They are a pretty stout unit for the most part? Hope this helps Ken Irwin

When I took off the T-Case the tag said it was a New Process, not a New Venture. Was the number still 241? At first I noticed some oil dripping all over the frame. I got under the truck and looked but couldn't see where it was coming from and then I started hearing noises like gears rattling around. I got under there again and looked and by that time the tail shaft on the back of the case had a hole in the top of it and was cracked the rest of the way around and came off in about 4 different pieces. The acual case had a crack down the fron't of it also, and wouldn't engage in 4WD. Fun stuff!

Noise in Transfer Case

This is not as uncommon as you might think. New Venture Gear (NVG) (formerly New Process Gear) used a type of split "snap ring" to hold the main shaft in place. If this "snap ring" breaks this allows the main shaft to slide forward and will engage the clutches and partially engage four wheel drive. This motion will quiclky wear items in the case that are not supposed to be engaging/disengaging as often as is now occuring. There is an after market fix for the snap ring issue with a tougher keeper for the axial movement however the main shaft is replaced by one with a larger machined slot to accept the lager "snap ring". The New Venture Gear NV 241 D is the orignial transfer case. With a 241 HD being a direct replacement as far as I can determine. The D in 241 D stands for Dodge as I understand but there may be other models that will also bolt up. I do have a few contacts at NVG if you need technical information to assist your search. Let me know. Hope this helps Ken Irwin

NV has 3 versions,

241 standard duty

241HD heavy duty (one extra bearing and another set of planetary gears)

241DHD larger drive chain, PTO support bearing, increased oil capacity and PTO cover

HD = heavy duty

DHD = Dodge Heavy Duty

Above info is to the best of my recall.

There is a BorgWarner snap ring that will fit the 241 and solve the problem with the OEM snap ring breaking or 'walking' out of it's groove.

When that snap ring breaks the transfer case makes horrible noises! If you keep driving with the snap ring broken, it'll take out the rest of the case. Just ask me how I know... . :rolleyes:

There is a t-case saver out there called the Gilly's T-case saver and it is a HD collar that replaces the wimpy snap ring design and works very well. I can't remember the link and I couldn't find it on Google, but there is an article in one of my Four Wheeler magazines that talks about it and has install instructions as well. I'll see if I can find it. :D

Its a good mod but typically doesn't work on 2000 up trucks? Different tail housings? Gilly's / SouthBay Truck can help you, the are in Hawthorne, CA. Sorry don't have the # handy.

My T-Case is also toast. It makes nasty noises when put in 4wd. It sounds like it's popping in and out of gear. People in another truck could hear it!

Is the 241HD a direct replacement? I'd rather not have to go to the driveshaft shop if possible.

Todd,

It should be, my 95 has the 241DHD. I've owned it since 5/97 and 23K, no warranty history shows any t-case r&r, which will lead me to believe it was ordered with it.

I changed my own snap ring last night, it was broken on the tips, but still holding. What's the saying about being good or lucky? I got lucky this time.

Best of luck getting it back together.

Andy. . please look at this post as a question, not a flame

as to the Dodge transfer case, if you have the tailhousing that accepts a snap ring you have the HD also known as DLD in the Dodge world as we do not use the standard duty version. . the snap ring issue is only with the DLD transfer cases [and maybe the standard version]. the DLD has a single planitary gear and narrow chain. . when you pulled yours apart did you open the case or just the tail housing ? would be easy to see the difference inside there.

to my knowledge. . the one that came with the dana 80 is the DHD version that has triple planitary gear and tripple width size chain. . only in the one tons and snow plow and trailer tow package 3/4 tons. . please go to the site I showed above and give them a call to confirm if I'm wrong in your mind. .

we went through all this several times on posts a while back if you remember, looking at your sign up date you might have read them and some were in the pullers threads.

AGAIN NO FLAME intended, just trying to clairify

My 96 2500 came with a 241DHD as part of the snow plow prep package. I've owned the truck since new... And the snap ring broke on it leading to the failure as described on the link to the transfer case saver collar.
