how easy is it to do the valve springs in the truck? i wanna do a 4k gsk in a buddies truck and wanna know how hard it is to do in the truck?

With out knowing your abilities it is an impossible question to answer. :)It is not rocket science but you need to use care in handling the keepers to prevent a major  The rear cylinders will have you hugging the engine, and a small tool wll help :-laf

well my abilities are good. yes i know to be careful this is not the first time ive done valves im just wondering with the engine shoved way back in there if i can even get to numbers 5 and 6 at all. the other thing is whats the best way to hold the valve up.

Just make sure the piston is on top for every valve spring you change. Napa makes a small low profile spring compressor that works, even on the back cylinders. It is not that hard, just kinda tight for big guys, I am not a big guy so... . :)

When I did my 12 valve, I got springs from PDR. They came with instructions, 1+ 6 are pair, both up, 5+2, 3+4. You can do 2 cylinders, then roll over til #5 comes up, do 2, etc. Then you go thru the process of valve adjustment.

I use the KD tools number 3271 valve spring compressor. It is time consuming but it fits on 5 and 6 pretty easily. The tool is cheap only like 20 bucks. It is just remove and replace. I suggest getting yourself a barring tool to make spinning that motor a little more easy. Somtimes if a belt is old you will have a hard time turning it with the alternator.

An easy way to tell you have your engine in the right spot for each cylinder pair is to watch the rockers for either cylinder of the pair. When you are right where the exhaust is almost closed and the intake just starting to open for either cylinder then that's TDC for those two. Like PToombs says 1 & 6 are at TDC together, 2 is paired with 5; 3 and 4 are paired . . . an inline 6 is like two 3-cylinder engines mated back to back.

thats a lot of what i was thinking. my biggest question was would a tool fit under there. no its just a matter of getting that tool. thanks all for the advise.

I've been looking into a spring compressor from Snap-on ($48. 00) what other companies have a good spring compressor to do valve springs on a 12v cummins

The Valve spring tool I got from Geno's comes with a bolt to replace the eccentric lever especialy to do #5&6 on second gen 12 valve trucks. Its the one at the bottom of the column on page 37 of your new Genos catalog you got with Issue 57.
