when you go to a class above regular one ton pickups, there are a lot of downsides also. we have a couple of 550 psd's and a 4 door gmc 6500, so ive seen the results. they have heavier springs[ translates to a rough ride, even with air suspension], bigger brakes[no problem there], usually geared very low [big problem, they have no top end at all]. but the biggest problem is the bulk of these trucks when trying to do simple things such as going through a drive in window at the bank or a fast food place, forget it. the other problem is that in order to get a pickup type bed, you have to order and have installed a aftermarket bed. theres another 3000 to 4000 dollars. nope, our 2001. 5 3500's have everything that someone hauling a reasonable amount of weight will ever need. thats my experience.

I don't even bother with fast food drive thru's in my 2500. "Can you please turn of your car, I can't hear you".....

My usual method of approaching a fast-food drive-through:

1. Stay back at least 2 car lengths from the menu board when there's just one car left in front of me.
2. Blip the accel just enough to get me moving, and immediately shift to Neutral and kill the engine as I brake to a stop at the speaker.
3. Give food order.
4. When employee says "thanks, drive up", restart engine and proceed.

Never had a complaint doing this.

99% of drive through workers around here are so rude that i don't give a crap anyways lol. Before i took my work truck home and had to drive to work I know the people at the mcdonalds by my house hated me. I am sure a cold 24 Valve doesn't sound good on a headset.

I get kinda tickled when I see the teller at the bank drive-thru make a dive for the volume control button and you can see all the folks in the bank looking at her. That Cummins sounds mighty fine under the drive-thru canopy. #ad

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who experiences this phenomena. I remember my first drive up window with the Cummins rattlin' away and they asked me to shut off my motor. My wife said my grin was a $hitty one, I have to agree with her.
Heck, it's not my fault they put the speaker crotch high to a grasshopper, right where the sound is the sweetest.
Another downfall to the heavy duty trucks, I don't know about other states but around here they cost a fortune to license and insure.

KC, I'll bet you've done that move at the Wendy's on 46 in Little Ferry a bunch of times. They just can't hear over my engine too.

Nope - can't get the duals around that tight curbing there, so I just park if I'm at that Wendy's and go inside. That's the other problem I have - if they line the drive-thru lane with a (tight) curb, and it has ANY kind of a turn, I just park or drive away. Almost leveled some shrubbery at a bank doing that.

I have one drivethrough worker who insists that I should not have to turn off the engine, and she simply deals with it.

I also stay back a bit from the vehicle in front of me... and some jackii seem to think this is an invitation to jump ahead of me in line. Screws up the order computer bigtime, and the manager yells at em.

Fun Fun Fun.

<font color=blue>I pulled into Sonic the other day (drive in type place) and within like 30 seconds some lady was at my truck window telling me to turn off my truck because they coulnd't take any orders. So I shut it down, and promtly turned on the radio w/amp and played some music. Then when we went to leave I made sure to run the RPM's up just for her. Thought bout typing a letter stating how having to shut down so soon destroyed my turbo, and that I wanted Sonic to buy a new one... . lol But I can;t do that... . yet #ad

Dan kinda thought she was cute, so I guess I'll have to go back and do it again... ...

I stopped going through drive throughs after I got my truck... just go inside and get it to go. . usually quicker.

You want to talk about fun... You should have seen the expressions on peoples faces when I used to take my Ambulance through the drive thru. Across the mirrors it was 9ft wide and it was 8'6" tall. I've seen lots of 'em leaning out the widow to see if I was going to tear the awnings off. I had one Wendys manager come out the window to his waist. He almost did a header into the asphalt trying to wave me off. I never hit anything though. Thats what cracks me up about those in a quandry about buying a dually. I was at least a foot & half wider than any dually and I never hit anything with that ambulance. You just learn to park and walk, takes a little more time but most of us need the exercise anyhow.....

the height thing can definitely be a problem, especially when you in west va. , off the interstate, and see a tunnel that doesnt look big enough to drive a vw beetle through. ive found the best way to deal with this is either back away or close your eyes and hit the throttle.
