Guys,,,,,,check this out. I know we discussed how much we are willing to pay vs their worth, but holy mother of acceleration!!!!!!!!!!

This is the ad as it appears in my local news print;

1992 Dodge 250 CTD 4x4 Club Cab,auto,air

145K "highway" miles

Very sharp/clean,well maintained

Now,,,,are you ready for this???$10,500!!!!!

Whats up with this? Look at it this way.

My truck cost me $5,000 with 166K. So basically this is the same truck with a tad bit less miles and the 4X4 package. Now, I ask you, is the 4X4 package worth an extra $5,500????????? NO WAY NO HOW. I could see maybe $6,000 or go as high as 7K if the truck has new tires and really nice paint, but this is not happening.

Now I could see paying $35 for a single Snap-On wrench cause you got to have it, but this?????

You 4X4ers willing to pay that? I'm told that the 4X4 package is worth $1,000 to $1,500

Another thing, the 4X4 package cost more to insure , more maintenance and mileage suffers due to the added weight. I couldn't believe how much more the insurance co. wants to insure a 4X4. It all adds up quick.

My local Ford dealer had a truck almost exactly like the one described in the ad above, they were asking $8500 and it was gone in 2 days.

It will amaze you how fast a clean first gen that hasn't been abused will sell. They have a reputation for going a long way even with the trans problems most people have they are a heck of a deal. What other truck can you get for the money that will get 20+mpg and be as reliable as these are. Now they have their quirks but for the money they are a heck of a deal.

Now I do agree that 10k is a bit much but I have seen other people pay this and more for a really clean one.

BTW I bought a really clean one owner reg cab 4x4 LE bone stock with 142k on it a little over a year ago and paid 6k for it and didn't even think twice.

If the truck you mention is clean and has good paint it should sell for 8. 5k easy. When I started looking I was amazed at what people would get for them but remember this what is the motor and axels worth just to part the truck. You will have a hard time finding a running cummins under 5k in most major cities just because of the demand... .

I bet he gets close to that. I would say he threw in about 15% for dickering room. So $8,500 would most likely get. A good clean reasonable milage 92 would bring that.

Is a 4x4 worth the extra money. You are the only one that can decide that for the type of use you do. Myself I want the $X$. I see 2 wheel drives in that papers pretty often. The are listed for a while also. Put a 4x4 in and see how fast it sells. Most of the time it is sold within a couple of days.

There is no doubt, the DODGE CUMMINS holds its value. Well. lets see, 35-40,000 for a new one, 10,000 for a used one 11 years old. Sounds a little high but he will probably get very close to 8000 for it. Now, aren't you glad you made the investment? :D Don

I know this is a little off the subject but I wonder how many people would buy a new first gen with all the little problems we all know fixed. It would be the work truck of the century... . even better put a 4bta in it and get 25-28 mpg... . and loose the sagging front end problem...

I am still amazed that the big 3 get away with selling what they do at times.....

I paid $10k for my '92 (2WD) last year. It had 47k miles at the time, was very clean, and I bought it from the original owner. I was looking at junk trucks with 150-200k miles and up for $9k or more, and that was just 2WDs. Guess it just depends on where you are and the local market.

To answer this question. I was going to buy a new 89 model W350 C&C. Two weeks before I was going to order it. My wife went out and bought a new 88 Dodge Aries. I couldn't afford payments on two new vehicles.

On a side note. I hated that Aries for 5 years. LOL

Well i look at it like this. The motor and trany are worth 5k, the 4x4 1-2k, the club cab an extra bonus so add that in. And if its really clean and not abused i would have to say 8500-9500 for it isnt bad. There is no way in H!@% i would pay 40,000 for a new one. To much computerized garbage i cant work on. So if you added all the benefits rather than getting a new one. Its just up to who ever wants to buy it. I paid 12000 for my rig in 2001 and it had 75000 miles on on it. And i have put about 5,000 worth of goodies on it. All i can say is that if i was looking to buy another right now i would definately give him a call. The older ones are just so much easier to work on, plus we already know how to make them run with the new ones:cool: .

Perhaps it was a misprint and the truck has only 45K miles. That would be worth $10,500

BTW, a 4X4 around here is on the farm. That means it's a near wreck. Sides dented in, rear bumper hanging low, bed is all but broken down, several lights broken out, and the interior,,,,,,ohmigosh!

I met up with a farmer out in the field once while I was hunting groundhogs :D He was in the truck,, about a '90 model CTD. Well the dog has just relieved himself IN the truck... ... ... .  :rolleyes:Looked like the truck has a leaking heater core I said

I'll pass on the farm truck 4X4's even for $4000 The 2X4's seem to be better cared for, treated with respect and kid cloves.

I agree it sounds like a lot, but I have to echo what's been said about location -- it really depends on your area and the truck. I'm in Iowa -- try and find a clean first gen around here!

A friend of mine just sold a '90 W250 reg cab that was a farm truck -- box is bent to pieces, paint is for garbage, interior is trashed. A guy drove from Wisconsin and gave him 5k for it. It was up for sale a week.

If you figure we're buying these truck with about 150k miles on them, and that they should last for another 150k, then 10 grand doesn't sound so awful. I think these truck are kind of in the transition stage from being commonly available to being kind of a cult/collectors item.

I'm lucky enough to have 2 -- I just picked up a '93 W350 -- not in Iowa though. The plan was to sell the '93 D350 to help pay for it, but now I'm thinking about hanging on to it and selling my car -- a '99 Olds. Just because I really love these trucks!

A lot of us have got our trucks for great prices over the last several years -- goodonya for that! But the situation is changing and we can't expect to keep getting them for cheap anymore.

I had a '99 2500 quad cab, and the only thing it had that I liked better than my '93 is the back seat. Other than that, I like the older style a lot better. Plus it looks tough! None of that wimpy rounded off look . . . :D

When I first saw my truck for sale the dealer was asking $10,900 for it. 1992 w-250, 250,000miles I bought it for $6,700. It was a good deal for me rather than spending 20 or 30,000 on a newer used 2nd gen truck.

I agree location has a lot to do with the value of our first gen trucks. Here in the greater Vancouver area these trucks if they are in good condition really hold their value and are impossible to find. Although my truck is a 92 there is not a bit of rust anywhere, still has the original paint job, is cheap to operate and gets great mileage. 150,000 miles on the engine (with regular maintenance) on these trucks is not a concern. The first gen truck with the CTD has proven to be a good, tough truck and they are not making anymore.

Yeah, I hear that! There is a family member [not mentioning any names] who believes that a vehicle with 100K miles is worn out and beyond it's use-full life. Needs to be introduced to the CTD :D But, yet believes a diesel has no place in a vehicle:rolleyes: Go figure, huh.

Scott,

You know the saying "You can lead a horse to the water, but you can't make him drink".

Al

I know that well. When unspoken family member herd I was getting diesel power you'd think I had tarnished the family name. When said person found out that it's got 166K miles you'd think they had a padded cell reserved with my name on the door.

Read my lips. NO,,,,,,,,,,,CAR,,,,,,,,,,,,,PAY--------MENTS:D

The bank don't own my truck
