A buddy is about to do a head gasket replacement and we hear that the old head bolts should be discarded. Is this correct and if so, why? Is this the case on all the engines? Thanks in advance.

The Cummins head kit will include a bolt gauge. Used to determine the streatch of a bolt. It's a go/no go gauge.

This should answer all your questions.

Thanks and sorry for forgetting to ask this in the first post, but do you know how much the head weighs?

I can lift one and carry... but cann't pull one off the engine. I have lifted one off a school bus engine with the help of an assistant. What we did was to secure two old fan belts to the head and use the loop of the belt as a hand-hold. In a bus that is. We could stand right along side the engine and pick her up and carry it out the door of the bus.

I'll guess... ... ... . ahhh... ... ... . 88. 3 lbs

Ok, so I was off a few... Big Whoop!! LOL LOL ROF :-laf

I MUST be stronger than I thought. !!! ..... "That was only 170 lbs? Huh! Felt like 90 :D

Strong like bull, smart like ox! :-laf

I can't believe it weighs 170 lbs. , I can pick one up and I'm a liteweight. Maybe thats shipping weight, with the crate and packing. My guess is 120,130 or so. I just put one together, why didn't you ask last week? I could have weighed it. :D

DJb will you weigh the darn thing and let us know so I can sleep at nite? :D

im guessing that they are shipping it in a nice container too so that will take up some weight,,, I can pick one up and move it around but it's to akward to pull off in the truck by my self,,, I just use hoist to help.

But I'm still kinda confused here about the head bolts... . do they need to be replaced or can they be checked to make sure they ain't stretched?

This is just my . 02 but I would change them. It has been my experience, at least on other makes of vehicles that if it`s a torque to yield bolt simply replace it. I have had the unfortunate experience of having TTY bolts that were "in spec" snap off during the final angle torque step. Let me tell ya it`s NO fun taking off a cylinder head that you JUST put on, only to have to "easy out" the broken bolt out of the block :{ . I have also had TTY bolts that would not reach the initial torque, it just kept stretching (you could feel it in the wrench). Mind you all of this stuff happened on teeny tiny import size hardware but for the cost of a set of bolts, cheep insurance IMO.
