The Cummins head kit will include a bolt gauge. Used to determine the streatch of a bolt. It's a go/no go gauge.
This should answer all your questions.

This is just my . 02 but I would change them. It has been my experience, at least on other makes of vehicles that if it`s a torque to yield bolt simply replace it. I have had the unfortunate experience of having TTY bolts that were "in spec" snap off during the final angle torque step. Let me tell ya it`s NO fun taking off a cylinder head that you JUST put on, only to have to "easy out" the broken bolt out of the block :{ . I have also had TTY bolts that would not reach the initial torque, it just kept stretching (you could feel it in the wrench). Mind you all of this stuff happened on teeny tiny import size hardware but for the cost of a set of bolts, cheep insurance IMO.DJb said:But I'm still kinda confused here about the head bolts... . do they need to be replaced or can they be checked to make sure they ain't stretched?
