Hello Gents,

Pulled my head due to a knock investigation. Pistons looked good and cylinders looked perfect so I put the head back on with new gasket and NEW head bolts.

Well the knock still had me worried so I decided to pull the motor to put in new bearing and rings etc.

The new head bolts I put on a month ago were torqued, only run less than 30 minutes (not even driven with)

Is it safe reuse the head bolts since they didn't go through any heat cycles, just the initial torque?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

You could have reused the original bolts. A Cummins head gasket kit contains a gauge for measuring stretch. I'm sure the length is also published somewhere.

Thank you GAmes.

Once again you are there for us slow learners.

I have the bolt length card still in the box form when I changed the gasket a month ago.

Thanks again.

For those that don't have one, here it is.

Well, guess not.

Corrected by Gary. Thank you, sir.

That's the wrong one Scott. The correct one is service tool M3823921 and has the the three head bolts on it, plus the C series bolts. The B series bolts are maximum shank lengths 71.5 mm (2.815 in.). 122.1 mm (4.807 in.) and 182.9 mm (7.201 in.)
