Well,i just made the last payment on my 99 2500 5 speed,so ishould have expected something like this would happen. Anyway, now the head gasket is leaking antifreeze from the front of the motor(rite in front of the exaust manifold) I feel like this is a job i will let someone else tackle, however im still wondering if there is anything tricky about this job or anything that i should watch for when the gasket is being replaced? How many hours labor should i expect to be charged for?

The job is really not rocket science. If you are mechanically inclined you can do it. Get your self a shop manual for your truck. When you have the head off engine you'll have to take it to a automotive machine shop to do the necessary, check for cracks, check valve guides, machine for flatness. You'll have to clean the block surface yourself. If your going to do any mods you may want to Oring the head. Do it right the first time use Cummins parts you'll be set. If you have any problems there is plenty of help on this site. Good luck thanks Steve B.

I had mine replaced a couple months ago, leaking right under the thermostat housing... I think the book listed about 20-22 hours for the job, since i had an aftermarket warranty that was supposed to cover it, then refused to I wound up paying the bill... and they only charged me the hours they acutally spent on it: 20, but that was replacing head gasket, radiator, H2O pump, and a couple other odds and ends...

If I had another means of transportation (and if I knew the warranty co. would refuse to pay a valid claim) i think i would have attempted the procedure, always nice to get that feeling of satisfaction when she roars back to life ;) also it would have taken me probably the better part of two weekends and most the week in between to get everything done... it took the shop a little over two days (took it in on thursday evening, picked it up monday)

Ok,so i guess im gonna do the job myself. I really dont want to buy another service manual . Would anyone want to trade manuals i have one for the 95 12 valve & need one for the 99 24 valve. Or would someone send me procedures for head removal and instalation for a 99 ?

Thanks for all your help.
