does anyone know if there have been problems with head gaskets or the heads on these engines?. know of someone with approx 60 k and the head gasket is leaking just behind the thermostat area. the truck has 4 in exh and exh brake, otherwise it is stock. thanks in advance for the info!. also the gasket is leaking water/antifreeze

The OE gasket does have a problem

The fiber material, seperates from the steel backing,in the area around the front of the head. Granted I am running twins, with about 60psi I dont think had anything to do with the failure, cause the flame rings were'nt compromised. In my case the oil passage near the front, leaked oil. A water passage is near by,and I'm sure if I'd let it get worse coolant would have been next. Merv

Huff n Puff... "Granted I am running twins, with about 60psi I dont think had anything to do with the failure"

What are you smokin. . an HO with 17. 5 to 1 compression ratio and 60 lbs of boost and you don't think it had anything to do with it :p. . ooops re-read you sig. you don't have a HO. . but you do have 16 to 1 compression

by you post count and sign up time frame you may have missed several posts in the past. . you need to do some search feature and you'll see that there have been several others that have gasket issues with over 50 lbs. of boost blowing the gasket... and yes a couple of stockers also.

when you replace your gasket, be very careful to follow the torque specks and re-torque procedures set out by cummins

My head gasket was gone at 75K miles. It was leaking oil out the front slowly, and firing rings were torn away from the gasket material, and starting to deform. When the head bolts were removed one of them hissed as it was broken loose with compression. The only reason I had it changed was to O ring, and because I seen the oil leak,I had no idea the rest of the gasket was in such poor shape. My truck has been bombed for 26K miles, and with the B1,i hit 46-48 psi regularly with the dd3's,and supermentals, and when i had the bully dog 7;s in there,I hit 53 psi on a few occasions.

More then an oil leak up front

I had four other 'cracks' in the factory head gasket besides the big leak up front.

The crack to the water gallley on 3 and 4 and the cracks from cyl 3 to cyl 4 and to cyl 5 where probably there for a long time before the front leak.

This was on an Ho but it was also working beyond what is deemed stock. :p

I have a oil leak and it looks like it is coming from front of the head gasket. But most of the oil is up about 1" from oil pan and down to the bottom of oil pan and then is sprayed all the way back to the rear end. Were is all your oil going to? If you need pictures let me no.

Willyslover no need to get personal.

I was trying to make the point, that compression is the most likely reason a headgasket might blow, but it is not the only reason. Coolant and corrosion can cause a head gasket to leak. Oil pressure can fatigue the gasket too. When one has worked on cars for as many years as I have, you see the many different ways a part can fail. In my case ,I saw a failure of the fiber material near the oil passage, and I did not see a flame ring failure, after taking it apart . I am just posting what I found in my case. In my opinion a stock HO engine blew a head gasket cause the material fatigued and not because it had too much compression. Merv

head gasket 24 valve

if one was to remove and replace the head gasket on there own and not have it done under warranty. how much would it cost to use the best quality parts and where would a good parts source be. this will probably be fixed under warranty just in case it turns out to be a problem with the head or the block. however once the 100k warranty is up it is going to be time for power mods. thanks in advance for the info.
