2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Head lights stay on

I converted my headlights to sport headlights about 5 years ago and all has been good until a week ago. Driving in Mexico I stopped for fuel turned the lights off and they would not turn off. Both high and low beams were on. I have them wired on relays so I took each of the grounds off the batterys to turn them off. My fog lights still work off the headlight switch so I used them for had lights to get around for now. Any Ideas if this a wiring problem or a relay problem or a headlight switch problem? Would be greatly appricated. I am in a very remote area and am not sure if I should dig into this problem here or wait till I am back to civilazation (4 months). Thank you for any help Mike

OK I'm just guessing now, when I made my headlight/relay system I had to have one relay for highs and one for lows so if I had this problem "its not an issue" I'd check to see if its just high or low beam that stays on, if so, most likely a relay stuck in one position it could be both relays but both going out at the same time is very unlikely. After that I would suspect the multifunction on the column.

Remote diagnosis isn't easy without a wiring diagram of the conversion!

Most Sport lamp transplants in 1999-2002 Rams are wired about the same, using the existing multi-function & headlight switches to provide a path to ground. Here is my drawing of the basic OEM headlight circuit for these years: http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9531/rambasicheadlightwiringep0.jpg.

Most rewire jobs for the Sport conversion utilize the OEM wiring from one or both OEM headlight sockets, grounding the trigger coils of added relays via the multi-function & headlight switches.

The thing you describe that adds to the confusion is the fact that BOTH filaments are on. You will have to analyze your added wiring to see how that's possible.

One frequently overlooked difficulty that has surfaced with some Sport lamp transplants involves people wiring to mimic the Brite Box (low beams on with high beams). That problem typically shows itself when the multi-function switch is moved to the high beam position and then back to the low beam position - the high beams stay lit. The problem is caused by a path to ground through the trigger coil of the fog lamp relay. I doubt this has anything to do with your problem but to eliminate that possibility try pulling the fog lamp relay and see if it cures the headlight problem.
