Head liner

OK, here's one for you. My 95 std cab head liner is seperating where it meets the windshield. The thin gray material is starting to hang down for about an inch from the windshield back. Have any of you guys ever had or seen this problem and what can I do about it? I can gently push it back up and it will stay for awhile but will come loose again. Sure is frustrating.

You can try Spray Adhesive or contact cement. Either one will work well.

My 95 just started doing the same thing a few weeks ago, I really do need to get some adhesive and get it fixed before the whole darned thing drapes down!

My 97 started doing exact same thing about 2 months ago. It's statring to bug me enough to start looking for the fix. A local shop told me if I spray adhesive it might bleed thru the fabric because it's so thin. He said I should just reo headliner because only the fabric is coming loose - not the backing. He said only real way to fix this is to redo headliner. What do you all think about that comment?

Tried the contact cement on my friends 1st gen and it didnt work so good, didnt last. Around here I see signs for new headliners for $55. 00

Yeah, it's a pain

My only experience with headliners was in my old Dodge Aries. I will have to admit it was the biggest pain in the butt. There is not much you can do except take it all down and redo it. There is a thin black foamy material under the fabric that just seems to deteriorate during time. I had to take the molding strips off and of course when you take these self taping screws out they just never seem to go back in tight. But anyway there was a wooden type of board that the fabric was attached too. As soon as I pulled the fabric down all this black stuff fell out and went over everthing. What a mess. It all just disintegrated and fell out. Once I got this big board out of the car I scraped all the old junk off and used a good contact cement to attach the new head liner that I bought from JC Whitney. Just be carefull and let the cement dry a little while until it becomes tacky or it will bleed through the material. I spent a couple of days doing this and taking my time but I will have to admit it did look good after I got it all back together though. One additional comment. Use a good contact cement since you don't want this liner coming apart. I had some can spray adhesive that I was going to use and it just didn't seem like it would be strong enough so I bought some, kind of expensive contact cement in a can that was OK for rubber, which is kind of what the backing is anyway and it held up nice.

One more thing that I forgot

Obviously the reason that this backing on the fabric is deteriorating so fast is due to the heat from the roof. I'm assuming that the pickup has probably a 1/2" or so space between the metal and the board that the headliner goes on. In my Aries I bought some rolls of insulation to fill this gap since there was none there at all to keep the heat away from the liner. It worked good and also kept alot of heat out of the car in the summer. I haven't done this in the pickup yet so I am not sure the spacing or how this setup is. I'm assuming it's pretty similar and I'm sure my 97 will need it eventually too.

1995 headliner

I'm having the same problem in my 95' standard cab. It is so bad I'm going to have to replace the thing. I got a price of $90. 00 from Mopars4less.

I used to do these with a friend of mine that has his own upholstery shop. The only thing you can do is have it redone. The spray adhesive in a can is different than a contact adhesive used by a good shop. The backer board has to be copletely cleaned or nothing will stick. Also, if you smoke save your money fo a new liner. The nicotine reacts with the adhesive and causes it to break down.

That happened to my 93 . I had the liner replaced for $35 in Texas.

I replaced the headliner in the wife's '95 reg-cab a couple of months ago. We bought the truck used, and the previous owner was a smoker and had burned a couple good sized holes in it. Also I don't know what kind of hair gel he used, but there was a patch of nasty funk directly behind your head. Yuk! Since it was a reg-cab it only took less than an hour to replace. Just buy a new one they're cheap enough.

Dodge must have saved some money with the glue and material they used. My wife's 95's headliner is crap. I'm gonna have to yank it out. I talked to a guy who does 'em and he said that it does deteriorate, so trying to glue it back is a waste of time and can make things worse for the guy who does try and redo it.
