Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Head swimming in San Diego

I recently purchased a used (oviously) '01 2500 with 165k miles. After browsing around for a few hours I am experiencing TD overload and I can plainly see I need to start with a performance transmission before I do anything. Can anyone local recommend a good mechanic that can change out a transmission and help me out with other mods? I haven't settled on a transmission rebuilder yet.
Also, at 165k miles, am I ok to start performance mods? I am told that the 24valve is a "million mile" engine. It seems to run well and got the green light from my local Dodge dealer. Anything else I should have checked out?
