I need some input on this one. Ever since I've changed to a 4" downpipe, I can never find the time to fabricate a heatshield for it. I was at a friend's house and he had some leftover header wrap sitting on the workbench. I was eyeing it up and he simply said, "Take it, I'm done with it". I mentioned about my bare downpipe and that started a heated discussion about wrapping exhausts amongst the other guys present. I left the roll of wrap on the bench and thought I'd look into it first. Anyone have pros or cons regarding wrapping the downpipe with header wrap? Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone.

Aloha~

well it keep's the heat where in need's to be in the exhuast, and keep's alot of heat out of the engine compartment.

you can even find cover's for turbo's too

we have used that stuff on race cars in the past-works great but one thing to consider, if you have oil leaks that stuff wicks it up-no big deal until it catches fire then you cant put it out. i don't know if there's different types and this has been quite a while back but we dont use it on street cars anymore

I wrapped the head pipe and about 5 feet of exhaust pipe on my truck about 3 years ago. I made things a bit quiter and so far, no problems.

Thanks for all the input, guys. Steve, you think my aluminized downpipe will make any difference as far as rusting is concerned after installing the header wrap?

the whole reason to wrap or coat the exhaust is to keep the heat in and use it to are advantage. hot exhaust gases flow better then cold ones. every one is rite on the rust. my exhaust is ceramic coated from the eng to the tail pipe this was done at a shop in my area the coating they use is a two part coating. we have been using this kind of stuff for some time now on race cars.

Your challenge will be to keep that pipe hot enough to prevent it from rusting. That is a good challenge. Are you up for it?

That means adding fuel to keep EGT up there, daily "bonzai" runs to dry the pipe, those kinds of things.

Concerning the rust, I'm sure keeping it hot will help. Avoid salt will help. Avoid wet conditions will help. But, it is my opinion that it will eventually cause rust. Now, I really can't say how long it will take.

I'll add that I really don't think it is that BAD of an idea... I'm just not convinced that it is the BEST solution. I would lean toward a heat shield similar to what comes from the factory.
