Two nights ago, while driving home from work, I am smelling this burnt wire smell. When I parked the truck, I located the smell coming from the headlight switch. I pulled the switch the next day while installing my new batteries. No burnt wires or signs of shorting out, just the switch slightly loose from the housing so I tightened it up. I had noticed it seemed a bit sloppy. I ordered a new switch but had no smell last night.

I thought it was 96 and earlier models that had the switch problems.

Mine is a 96 and the burned part was the brown plastic housing where the wires junction. The part burned so bad the light switch pulled out in my hand. Don't mess around, the part will burn and you will not be able to get at it soon enough to save your truck. The best insurance you could possibly have is you. If it cost you that will be minimal to the cost of a truck.
Please get it fixed. GIF GIF GIF

I had a 97 2500 4X4 gas before I got my 99 2500 4X4 diesel. The head light switch started to smell on me. Went to the Dodge dealer to get a new switch, well they had a switch and new wiring connector for $85. The part guy took the number off the new switch a I just got the switch. It looked the same but it was a little different. The switch was $29.

Point taken. Like I said, I have the switch coming UPS express from Mopar4less. The price escapes me now, I think it was in the teens.

Musclefixer-

I have only had to use my fog lamps twice since we took delivery in January, and they were during the past week! But two days ago when I started down the road and pulled the switch--you guessed it no fog lamps!! The switch feels tight and still lights up when I turn on the fog lamps, but I have no idea why they suddenly do not work. I have checked the bulbs, and they are fine. Any suggestions? The truck has almost 19K on it.

musclefixer, you might try putting a relay in the fog light circuit. Adding the extra draw of the fogs to the head light circuit may be "overtaxing" the wiring. A relay only takes a small "draw" to complete the loop and you can source the power from the battery or other unused/underused source. JMO
