Last night, on my '96 Ram 2500 12-valve, turned on the headlights, had no dash lights. Jockeyed the switch around a little, dash lights came on, headlights went out. I haven't noticed any hot smell as though the switch is overheating (doesn't mean it isn't, though). Truck is not equipped with any extra lights other than 6 LED-type running board lights. Checked previous posts regarding headlight switch and it sounds as though I need to get the Summit harness. I don't think it comes with the headlight switch. Anybody know of a good outlet other than the Dodge dealer (over $120 for a headlight switch there).

If things haven't melted from heat, I don't think you'll need a new harness pigtail. Didn't use the one that came with my switch. IIRC, I got mine from the dealer, but it was reasonable.

NAPA or Carquest should have the switch.

I got ours at NAPA. If you get the Summit harness, be sure and order the Flat fuse holder. It does not come with the kit and they want more for shipping then it is worth.

you can get it at carquest. They sell two versions, one that is made in china for like 45 bucks and the other for 75 bucks. The 75. 00 one is a original mopar part with mopar instructions and a pigtail if you need it- all packed in a standard box. if not, hold onto it if you ever do. I bought the mopar one. Works great!

Installation instructions for you: from my 96, might work with your truck too

Tools needed:

Phillips #2 driver

Might need flathead screwdriver to pry dash trim off

1. Go to store and buy favorite brand of liquor

2. Go home and start drinking favorite liquor

3. Lower steering column all the way and put in 1st gear (auto trans only)

4. Pull out cup holder, ashtray and remove the screws on each side and place to the side

5. Gently pry off the dash board, should be able to use your hands only. Be GENTLE. It has small metal spring clips behind that are pretty easy to pop out

6. Once dash is out of the way remove the screws holding in the headlight switch.

7. Remove the switch and carefully unplug it. Check for burnt harness plug. It it is really bad, needs to be replaced (plug that is)

8. Pull knob off the old switch, install on new switch.

9. Reinstall the switch on the harness and screw it back to the dash.

10. Reinstall everything else, dash, ash and cupholder.

11. Test and make sure everything works, if it does:

Go get another drink and thank us on TDR ;)

Depending on how you feel about working in this area with POWER applied, you might want to consider disconnecting the batterys before step #3. :D That way you can preform steps #1 and #2 Oo. Oo.

smoker,

go to the dealer and buy the kit for recall 819. Has all the instructions, materials and only is about 50 bucks for genuine MOPAR parts.

I just had something similar happen to me. If you have a after market radio check the illumination wire, mine the e-tape came off and shorted the system out.

Hope this helps.

Today I replaced the headlight switch and it wasn't difficult at all. The wire harness looked okay, so it was probably just a faulty switch. Thanks for all your advice. Wouldn't have tried it otherwise. Don
