I just removed the headliner as part of a project to install air suspension seats. I'm building an anchor point for the shoulder harnesses.

I had removed the headliner last year when I coated the entire interior with Herculiner and installed BQuiet sound proofing. At the time I considered trying to change the color from the OEM tan, to a more matching grey.

Recently I found the answer, Duplicolor Fabric and Vinyl paint. I bought it at the local WallyWorld, in the automotive section,(you won't find it in the paint section).

I used the medium grey, and it came out very nice. It required 4 cans.

I also used Krylon Fusion plastic paint to cover the plastic trim pieces. (thanks JR2 for the tip on the plastic paint!)

I want to do the opposite, (grey to tan. ) So you have my attention. Can the color come off the head liner or is the color completly dyed through. Ill be curious to see how the plastic paint holds up. Last time I changed the color of an interior the paint scratched off to easily. Look forward to the pics.

The color seems to be throughout the material, kind of like short knapped carpet.

I only painted the plastic pieces that are mounted on the headliner, so they shouldn't get much wear.

Another option would be to locate some thin material of the desired color and glue it to the headliner base. The base seems to be a stiff, semi rigid closed cell foam and the covering is a velvet type material that is glued to the base.
