Anybody mount these in your 3rd Gens? I'm thinking about getting some installed, but the only ones I've been able to find (a quick search, nothing fancy) were leather. Of course, we don't have leather.

What has anybody installed, what brand, how'd it work, etc?

Thanks.

A freind got a non-built in setup from walmart that straps the screens the the headreasts and the player sits on the center consol. The whole thing is in a nice bag, comes with ALL the cords, the screens are widescreen and swivel within thier own casing. Nice setup for about $300 I think. The only thing not included was headphones.

I was going to have the same thing done with the headrest about 6 months back. I did not end up doing it though because they only make them with the leather like you mentioned. They might have changed that since then but as of when I checked you could not get it with cloth.

Vizualogic makes these for just about every car.

There's a guy selling 100 of these on eBay right now. Taupe or Slate. Cloth or Leather. Just search eBay for "vizualogic dodge ram".

Or click here

They buy genuine factory headrests and mount 7" screens in them. When you sell your truck, just pop em out if you want to.

I came THIS close to pulling the trigger on a pair for myself, and a Pioneer AVIC N1 to go with them, before the wife hit the brakes :{

I got one of those from Walmart to keep the kids amused on long trips. I also got the P. I. E. adapter so it plays through the factory stereo.

I admit, it's not as cheap as some built in's, but it was over $1000 cheaper than any I looked at. I can also use it inside the hotel, trailer, of just kicking around in the garage.

Playing through the factory stereo it sounds as good as any of the +$1000 units I looked at.

By the way, It worked great on the first trip (5 in the truck, over 1000 miles in 4 days). Well worth the $375 I have in it ($300 for the unit, $75 for the adapter).

I've got the same setup from Wal-Mart and so far they've worked great. Logged over 4000 miles and have yet to experience a problem. I went with this setup so that I could switch them back and forth between the truck and wife's burb. I'm a firm believer in that you get what you pay for, but in this case it's simply doesn't hold water. I just couldn't justify over $1000 for a system that would be limited to one vehicle. Even it only lasts a few years, I can buy three of them for the price I'd pay to have one installed!

I put the DVD player in the lower center console and ran the wires through the back of the lid. There's just enough room for them to pass if you're careful!

This $75 adapter has peaked my interest though... tell me more! The only concern I would have is that I would be forced to listed to Nemo in surround sound where now I can listen to the stereo on the front speakers and have Nemo limited to the back of the cab.

Thanks for all the responses fellas.

I already have a 5" portable Audiovox DVD player with all the proper connections. I don't have the connection to hook it up to the truck stereo though. My daughter has used the heck out of that portable DVD player. It goes with us in mom's truck, dad's truck, the boat, the hotel, wherever she gets a hankering to watch a DVD, we can.

I guess I'm okay with spending the money to get something more permanent in the truck.

Does anybody have any experience with the drop-down style DVD screens/players that are up by the headliner?

Sound through vehicle stereo

I have a portable 7" DVD player that I picked up at Circuit City for about $200. Radio Shack has an FM Transmitter that plugs into the headphone jack on any portable electronic. It transmits on 4 FM Frequencies - 88. 1, 88. 3, 88. 5, 88. 7. There is a switch to select between them. If there is a local radio station on 88. 3, it can get hissy or a little may come through. Just flip the switch to another one, and tune the radio to it. Powered from a cigaratte lighter plug. As I recall, it was like $20 or $30 at Radio Shack. I tried searching on radioshack.com but could not find it.

My daughter is under 3 and this kind of device is critical to surviving a long trip of 30 minutes ;) or longer with all your marbles in tact :D She never has been much on riding in vehicles.

When I get home tonight if anyone is interested I can get a part number off it.

I would rather hear Barney or Blues Clues through the stereo than constant crying/fussing. We took a 7 hour trip when she was 1 that lasted 10 hours and I was ready to shoot myself before it was over. Never do that again without some entertainment.

I picked up a DVD Player with a 7 inch monitor fom Sams for $140. 00 and it works great. Can be used as a bag portable or straped to headrest or on dash (if you don't mind harassment from CA Highway Patroll). It has Audio / Video imputs and outputs. I searched for a month and found $499 unit not as flexible.

Sorry guys I am in the road so I don't always get back to the forum.

The adapter is a P. I. E auxilary input adapter that plugs in to the back of the factoy stereo. It has two RCA plugs coming out of it that the audio output from the DVD player plugs in to. You use the mode button on the radio to select the auxilary input. The sound is very good (even with my basic stereo). I found it online - I got the original information on the TDR forum (try search for "Auxilary Input" or try google. If I were at home I could get you the website. I'll be back this weekend and post it unless someone beats me to it.

I put the unit in the Top half of the console. It gets kinda hot so I didn't try the bottom. It does work very well, though. I really saved $$ and got a good system that can be used outside the vehicle as well (it comes with 120V and 12V adapters, two screens, and handsome carrying case... )

Nemo in stero isn't as bad as Lilo and Stitch for the 99th time...

;)

I've got 2 Concept 7" screens mounted in my factory cloth headrests.

My buddy is a dealer for them and they had a kit that came w/ 2 screens and a mount that goes into the headrest. Bascially you cut the cloth a little take some foam out, and the plastic base gets ziptied to the metal posts in the headrest. Then you run the cable in through the headrest down the back of the seat and snap in the screen. They work great and the kid loves them.

JRMora - I went to www.pie.net and looked at their application guide for the 2002-2004 Ram 1500. (they don't have any thing listed for 2500) They show part number CHRY02-AUX, 10-Pin connector at headunit. The notes say that the radio must be a CD changer controller and that it's not compatible with "RBQ".

So... I've got a single CD factory radio with no cassette player and no CD-changer. Is this adapter what I need?

Yes, that's the one. I think we have the same radio - on the lower right corner of the display you should find the letters "RBK" - that's the factory code for the radio. The PIE adapter won't work with the Nav radios (RB1 or RB4) or the 6 disc in dash changer (RBQ) but should work with the others.

By the way, I routed the wires out of a hole in the top of the cubby hole under the HVAC controls so I can eaily plug my player into the adapter.

To use the adapter, just press the "Mode" button on the radio under you get the right input.

For everyone else, here's the link: http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piechry02aux.html

I have the single CD player on my 2004. 5 and cannot find the RBK or any letters on the radio. Do the letters only show up when the radio is on?

I can't take a picture right now (I'm 600 miles from my truck - that's a loooong telephoto lens), nut on my radio it's printed in very small (like 1/16") letters on the display panel. If you can't find it, check the label in your glove box - it may have the radio code as well.

I do think you have the same radio - RBK, though.

Thanks JR for the reply. I don't have anything regarding the radio in the glove box label. I found a small white label "RAZ" printed on the left lower side of the readout. I really want this to work.

That's the code (mine is on the right side - I guess it varies on each model) It should work fine with this radio. I bought mine thru logjam electronics (they had quick service - see the link previously posted in this thread).

Install time was about 15 minutes (after I figured out where I wanted to run the connector. You just remove the screw above the trash bag hook on the dash, pop off the paneal around the center stack, and it was 4 screws to remove the radio. Plug the connecter on the adapter into the matching plug on the back of the radio and reassemble.

I ram the RCA connectors from the adapter out of the hole in the bottom cubby (not the one below the HVAC controls as I previously wrote), but if you have an auto trans, you'll have to find another location (you'd have a cupholder there).

I can post some pix this weekend if you or anyone is interested.

Good luck!

Juan
