Thanks for the recordings.

Sounds like since its more responsive to fueling signals, it could use a "Special" Smarty program to mellow out fueling at idle.

HRV44 & Smarty may be the hot setup. .

That really sounds neat - reminds me of the 327 Chevy small block I built up with a Duntov cam - real "Rumpity-rump"...



My truck does that to a smaller degree just for a few seconds when starting from a dead stop and lightly loaded - did it with the original VP-44 and stock injectors, a bit more when I went to the 1. 6's - and still does it with the new stock HO VP-44.



It doesn't adversely affect driveability, and I don't mind it a bit.

Mine purrs like a kitten compared to that. Slightly higher idle and a different sounding idle, but NOTHING like that!

Lope question answered

does it do that when you are say idling through a parking lot or does it just do it in neutral?

In answer your questions it idles normal in park and neutral.



The lope begins when shifted into drive. Shifting into neutral at a stop light is sometimes required if pulling a heavy trailer because the lope can sometimes feel violent. The Cummins actually begins pulsing and twisting the little 3500 while holding the brake down. To the driver and passengers sometimes you notice everyones heads and upperbodies lurching to the beat of the motor!



Yes, it will do it in a parking lot, with NO throttle applied. Normally the lope occurs only after the engine is warmed up to 160*.

The lope is not a given 100% of the time maybe 75-80%. I have learned to make the truck lope by lightly popping the throttle and then let it begin walking along. If it is started up a slope the tone is deeper and louder with a longer interval spacing between the lope.



It took about 4 months of getting thru negative thoughts that I made a mistake buying a Hotrod VP44. Finally it struck me that the truck was fast. The 2001 automatic has the small quick spool turbo that lights up with the wastegate J-hooked. The Edge is almost always turned off.

She LOVES her truck and will tell you so. It gets better with each mod.



As noted in prior posts, it is my wife's truck. It's Sarah's horse hauler. I went thru a short period of trying different fixes on the truck's lope issue. Finally I realized it was me who was the only one upset. She trains 2-3 times a week in the mountains and hauls all her girlfriends and their horse in an 18' stock trailer. Every 6 weeks she is competing between Canada and Florida pulling a 35' Sundowner trailer. This is her second Cummins.





She monitors the gauges and knows what they represent. EGT's are runnning a little warm in the climbs and now she wants more turbo. Go figure!!

Like the saying from the Forrest Gump movie "Life is like a box of chocolates" applies to HRVP44's.



"You do not know what you're goanna get till you take a bite. " From following TDR loping threads for 8 months I would surmise it goes from individual truck to truck. Two trucks with the same options can behave drastically different from mild to wild.
