Day 3...

Mniver-good job on the switch. Sounds like it will work well. Maybe combine that with the timer relay that bubba found and it would be something very close to factory.

My project, however, is not going so well. Day 1, let the first spring fling across the driveway, two cotter pin pullers and a screwdriver later (prying the retainer tears tools up pretty good). Day 2, truck door apart and mirror #2 disassembled. Day 3, one hefty aluminum tab ground off of the new mirror to allow it to fit onto the old base... and it still needs a lot of "clearancing" to get it to sit right.

I'm convinced the swap is worth it, even with all the extra work now. I just wanted to report on my experience so far and that getting the spring out isn't the hardest part of the swap. :(

I have a 01 with factory heat and power. But it is not the flip up mirror. Can this be done with the base off my current mirrors or would I have to buy both the 02 flip up mirrors and the 03 flip up mirrors. It is not worth it if I have to buy both sets. :(

Chip,

You'll need both sets. The standard heated sport mirror bases that you have are significantly smaller. I looked at this because I got two used sport mirrors for the wire harnesses and connectors for the flip-up swap. Similar designs, but too small.

You do have about $200 worth of parts advantage, though, because you've already got the HVAC control with mirror heat and the joystick for adjustment. I had to buy these parts.

So what would two sets of mirrors run me? Might be better for me to get the heated and power CIPA mirrors. Probably cheaper. Anyone run these?

My favorite source is eBay. I have seen the power set (pair) go for $300-400, and the manual set go for $250-350. I have also seen the power set advertised at dodgeparts.com for $309.

On a side note, I keep reading/hearing about this phantom "national backorder" on not only mirrors, but lift pumps, mirror switches, seems like everything that goes on a Dodge Ram. I think this translates to "don't have it in stock and don't want to mess with ordering it". I don't know if it has anything to do with being in the Detroit area, but dealers here have anything I've ordered the next day for me. Hope that gives some hope for those who's dealers are telling them the backorder story.
