Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Heater Core vs New Heater Hoses

I'm getting ready to change out the anti freeze, water pump, thermostat, and upper and lower radiator hoses. My dilemma, most likely from over thinking, is how much of a risk do I pose to the heater core when replacing the two heater hoses that go into the firewall? I don't plan on applying any undue stress but....I'm not up to dropping the dash and replacing the heater core. I've already got the two 90* hoses from Geno's as I know these hoses are the originals with 140,000 miles and 16 years of use. What'da you guys say? TIA, ph

If your not reusing them just cut the hose parallel to the tube that the hose slides over and then work your way under the hose with a small flat screwdriver to loosen it up. If you try to twist the hose to loosen it there is a good possibility of damaging the core, especially if they have never been off.

You can also (after verifying that the new hoses are correct) cut the old hoses off just beyond the heater core stubs.Squeeze the hoses and you can feel where to cut. Then take a utility knife with the dull side against the stub and slide it back cutting the remaining piece of hose. Then open the hose at the slit and work it off of the stub.

So all agree that replacing the hoses is the way to proceed. I guess I knew that 16 year old hoses were operating on borrowed time but needed the push to get'er done. Thanks for all the input.

Mine (heater hoses) are original, but I've also had em apart and carefully inspected them inside and out. It's cheap to replace them if they are at all suspect. Both rad hoses got changed out a few years ago.
