Heater in 87 Celica

The heater in my son's 87 Celica has a mind of its own. The heater will work when it wants to and only when it wants to. You can set it and it will be working fine then it will blow cold. Back and forth. Any ideas??

You probably have a vacuum leak in the system or the diaphram that works the hot water valve. Check the vac. hases under the hood for leaks and get someone with good hearing to linsten under the dash. bg
