Front and rear bumpers on the Ram are thin and flimsy. Anyone know any good sources for beefier bumpers? I'm not looking for custom dazzle and shiny, thin chrome. I'm looking for substantial thick steel for utility and protection. Thanks.

Husky trailers and Truckers Equipment in Corpus Christi,TX both sell Heavy duty replace bumpers. I've got a King Klaw bumper/grill gard on the front of mine. It is a stout bumper no shiny stuff all steel. The kind you can" wrap a chain around and pull a tree down stout". The only thing i wished i did was have painted with Rhino liner, oh well. They run right at 700. 00, kind of pricey but they look tough and are durable.

King KLaw is located in George West,TX the other brand sold here is also manufactured in TX. If interested let me know and I will get more info. and pics

I've been giving some thought lately to building a new front bumper. My thoughts are use 2X12X3/16 channel. Attach to the stock mounting points and add hooks, and whatever else seems appropriate. The look I'm going for is what you'll see if you watch 18 wheelers going down the road.

Has anyone tried this, if so any words of advice?

Bat,
I have a Ranchhand Front Bumper/Brushguard combination with a winch mount. It's heavy duty enoung to take whatever winch I could fit. I'm wooried about the mounting of the bumber to the frame. I don't think it could handle a large load. The bumper alone weighs close to 400lbs. Imagine the extra stress for a PSD stuck in the mud.
Moparguy,
A good friend of mine built a bumper for his old Cheby using a large piece of C-channel. Looked good but it was hard to make everything line up nice. My recommendation would be to buy one already built or have a professional welder build one for you unless you are handy with a torch and MIG.

Jeff - Don't worry about your frame with the Ranchhand combo bumper/grill. I've got the 3" double pipe combo on my '96 and it is not a problem. If the wimpy frames on the Cheby and Pherds can handle these bumpers so can your RAM. Drive through Central, South, or West Texas and see how many of these combo bumpers are around... no problems. Ranchhand can be found at: http://www.ranchhand.com

Personally, I've had good luck with mine. I've never had any damage from deer or other criters, and I have hit a few.

Another source you might be interested in is the bumpers from Rough Country. They look fairly solid. I'm waiting for a report from someone on them. http://www.roughcountry.net

The nice thing about ranchhand is you can keep all your bumpers, headache racks, bed rail caps, and tool boxes the same style. That really looks sharp... .....

Des,
I love the look of the ranchhand equipment. I have everything on mine except for the running boards. Had them but took them off. My big concern is trying to pull a large load with the winch with just a little portion of the frame holding that heavy bumper on. A friend of mine with a Ford told me about his frame cracking where his bumper mounted, but the Fords mount different.

I saw the pictures on the Ranchhand website. Are any of you guys going to Belen,NM (south of Albuquerque) for the TDR meet on March 17-18 so others can see the stuff?

Hey Joe,
I won't be in New Mexico but I will be at May Madness. I have the whole Ranchhand package except for the running boards. If you are at MM, you won't miss me.
