What, exactly is different about the "shift on the fly" transfer case? From the std transfer case? I'm getting different interpretations...
Gracias!

--in the "enlightened" times in which we live, "shift on the fly" IS the standard for the newer T-case designs----just a few short years ago, there were trucks put out with T-cases that were somewhat primitive in that they were to be shifted from 2H to 4H and back, either at the halt or on the just barely crawl... . the NP205 was one of those... Cast-Iron (ooohhhh yeaaaaah), gear-driven (whirrrrrrRRRrrrrrRRRRR), and virtually indestructible(hho-hho-hho), but, sadly, not suitable for wives and sudden encounters with less-than-optimal driving surfaces--4WD w/ a '205 required some advance warning, and I guess Detroit just doesn't think we're up to it anymore----I don't know of a non-shift-on-fly tcase available by anyone at the present time----4L does remain "shift at the halt, or at the crawl"----happy front-draggin'----rich

The transfer case on the 4x4s come standard with the shift on the fly. The H/D transfer case has the side cover for adding a PTO. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

MB-- that sounds right, but the little voice in my head (the one with the horn rims and pocket protector) is telling me that the HD difference having to do w/ PTO access is on the transmission, not the Tcase---sometimes the other voices make him go look it up----BTW here's a bit of "food for thought"... Years ago, my dad worked for a winch manufacturer that mf'd a winch (for WARN to label and market, I think) and an absolutely(mech and engineering) identical winch directly to an end-user client----the only differences were:

1. yellow paint, as opposed to gray or green
2. the presence or absence of the sacred "HD" in the name
3. $1000. 00

always look and see side-by-side (when possible) the difference between "stock" and "heavy-duty"... . sometimes the stock IS already HD, but just isn't bragging about it... sometimes there really is a difference to be taken advantage of----now, if I'd remember to look in the owner's manual about the pto port's location----rm

The HD transfer case not only has the provision for the PTO, it will also take more input torque... 1400 lbs. ft. as opposed to the standard transfer case which is rated at (if I remember correctly) 1028 lbs. ft. A (one row) wider and heavier-duty drive chain and corresponding parts are the upgraded components on the HD transfer case. Best "$100. " you can spend.

I have to go with John on this one since I remember on the CDW site that someone posted that the HD T-Case had a 3 row chain instead on the std. 2 row and that the HD was PTO ready. I ordered with HD T-Case since I wanted to run a PTO off the T-Case and utilize the Trans for speed selection. The HD part doesn't do much for since most of my 4 wheeln' is around town on the 3 or 4 snow days and the occasional wood getting weekends. BTW aren't all the 5sp PTO ready?

The major difference is that the HD case uses SIX planetary gears in the LOW range carrier as opposed to only THREE as on the LD case (carrier is the same, they just left out every other gear). Also, the HD does have a PTO pad which the LD does not (BTW, the six speed transmission has TWO PTO pads, one on each side). Don't know about the chain, I suspect it is the same.

Six gears provide the extra torque necessary to drive the PTO pump for snow plow ops, etc. For us "non-snow powing" folks, three gears is just fine and they are only used when you shift into 4L. In 4H or 2H the two cases function the same and have essentially the same rating (although the chain may be different).
Ron.
