trans?

sounds like a large cover rattling with some grinding to

the noise has been getting worse and im afraid to drive 40min to work. the noise is loud at idle (you can feel it in the floor) but at 2000 rpm its gone or very faint. history of trans and t/c trouble for about a year (tryin to save up for rebuild) a week ago the lock up unlocked getting off my exit when i down shifted (like my lock up switch was in the off position but was not) rpm droped and came back up the local shop said maybe a fly wheel (they are amaised the truck is moving on its own still). my driving style I dont let off to shift (locked-up) accelirating unless some one is riding w/me (not much down here) I have driven like this since I put the lock up switch in over this time (a year) the posibility of tering the fly wheel up is posible.

engine?

sound not heavy enough to be a bottom end knock. but my truck uses 1 1/2 gal coolant over 3 weeks and the oil shows moisture but not much. blow-by coming out the breather has been heavy since I came to MS from WV however it has been so humid and moist here on the gulf coast I thought condensation? or hoped it was anyways. droped oil last night and it looked ok in the beam of my mag light. the taffic runs 80 on I-10 I live and work right off the exits the truck cools but is operating temp and sits for 12hrs at a time I work 7 to 7 morn to night condensation? posible.

Noise and Moisture ? ?

Can't help on the noise but, ! ! ! Strongly suggest you get an oil analysis

SAP to detect if water, or anti-freeze is in your oil. The print out will tell you what to do from there. ANY WATER OR ANTIFREEZE IN THE OIL IS BAD !!! Could loose the engine!!! If you have one in your area "SPEEDCO" located close to major truck stops does "on site analysis for about $18 and some of the large CAT dealer shops do on site analysis (same day) Otherwise you may have to mail it off takes about a week. Good Luck R C

check flex plate bolts

Pull of the inspection plate and make sure that the none of the bolts have backed out from the front of the transmission. This happened to my 94 not too long after I bought it. :{ Turned out to be the by product of a cheepie rebuild. Grenaded the flex plate, the TC was wobbeling and the front seal was in bad shape. It did minimal scraping damage to the adapter plate on the rear of the engine, so I did not replace that. The only good that came of it was I decided to raplace the entire transmission with a properly built GB, so now I can now tinker with absurd amounts of power. Good luck.

Quick check you can do on that rattle noise... could be your carrier bearing. Mine made some strange noises before it was replaced. I could move the driveshaft at least 3/8" up and around.

As for the engine, if you're using coolant, thats a bad thing. Try a cardboard test. Take a big piece of cardboard and put it under the engine when you come home (hot engine). Hold it down with some bricks so it doesnt blow away. You will see any leaks that occur on the cardboard. If you dont get any green leaks, you have a headgasket problem. could be something else, but someone else may have an idea. .

good luck

A very cheap fix to temporarily solve a coolant problem is to "gut" the radiator cap. Remove the center disk so it won't hold pressure but will still vent and draw to/from the puke bottle. You can remove it with a big diagonal cutter or a cut off wheel to the rivet in the underside center. I did this to my '96 model 3 years ago when the left plastic tank on the radiator cracked. It would only leak under pressure and "used" coolant like you describe. Never really dripped anywhere. I pressure tested it with a radiator/cooling system checker and found the cracked tank. Gutted the cap and have never had another problem. It gets hot here in Ga and I have never had overheat or run hot problems.

About 2 years ago, I did the same thing on my '98 work truck when the radiator began leaking between the plastic tank and aluminum core. It, too, has never leaked a drop since.

If it is a head gasket, this could be a cheap fix to get you back home till you can remove the head.

As for the rattling, it sounds like a busted flex plate- the piece that holds the torque converter to the flywheel and allows for a slight "flex" between the two. Fairly common problem in forklifts and requires transmission removal to repair.

Best of luck and hope this helps!

I'm with Dieselnut and Gopher. Sounds like flexplate is either loose from the t/c or cracked. Does it make the sound in Drive while not moving? It sounded just like an engine knock and was worse at idle or low RPM. The higher the engine revved, the quieter it got.

OK guys I found the problem after removing the inspection cover I removed the small cover to acess the torque bolts aligned a bolt and atempted to remove it (maybe they loosened up) the bolt turned and turned and never got loose it was still snug so I looked again at the torq and flexplate and thought I saw a gap in the weld that holds the lug to the torque (the part the bolt threads in to) like it was broken. with my small pry bar I verified it was. after calling my local WV shop we came to the conclusion I needed a torq. I called all over and $650 was the lowest I could find (for an install with my parts) so I picked up my TDR travel companion and called the 2 closest MS guys they both told me to go to Rolands tranns. repair in picyune so I called him and left a message last night he called back new stock torq front, rear seal filter and fluid $500 + tax so I droped the truck off last night. when repairs are compleate the MS guys and I plan to meet for coffe this is so much more than a magazie and has already saved me counless $ thanks guys. I cant wait to get settled so I can repay the favor to members in need

I'll let you know how it turns out.
