235/80-17" on a steel wheel from an st model. The st wheel is 7. 5"x17". Looks like more choices in the drw size. Just a thought. Tall and skinny for the snow. Has anyone ever tried this combo?
I had a set of 235 85 17s Cooper Discover STs on my 04 DRW. Also put them on my 97 DRW after I sold the 04. My personal preference is for the skinnier tires in snow. The Coopers (or Cooper made Mastercrafts) are a good winter tire, imho. No reason that I know of why you couldn't put them on the OEM SRW steel wheels.
Now that reminds of a real funny story. In High School (Helena, MT) we took a Jeep with phat tires up to MacDonald Pass. Drove off the highway and up to the tower... . and then the phatties busted through.
We did a whole lot of shoveling that day... . way more than we wanted to. Learned my lesson about phatties and snow. :-laf
Then again I could tell about a friend's VW bug with phatties. Once on the way from the Zoo (Missoula) home we fishtailed on snowy roads with a semi coming. The only thing that saved our arses was the bug zig just as the truck passed and then zagged back into his lane. Or the infamous "Ski North Dakota Trip" when, in the same bug, we did a 360* spin down the hwy between Elliston and Ovando.
Nope, I'm firmly persuaded on thin tires fer the winter time.
