I don't have a service or even an owner's manual for my truck and I need to know where the fuel prescreen is. It's been cutting out on hills and getting steadily worse. I just changed the fuel filter 'cause I thought that would be the problem. I tried running fuel additives to get rid of any possible water, and got no results. I'm hoping its not the lift pump, but considering that its getting worse, I guess it could be. I haven't got a guage in it yet, so I don't know what the pressure is. Anyway, the prescreen is one step in front of getting a new lift pump. Thanks for any help.

Im not sure if there is a pre screen in the fuel tank.

The first check that I would do is check your fuel pressure, and maybe check for restriction. restriction check would let you now if you had a plugged screen. spec, is 6 in hg of fuel restriction.

I would bet that the fuel pump has gone south.

Good luck

There are two screens on the 24V trucks--one in the tank, and one at the inlet side of the lift pump. BOTH are a pain to clean.

Chances are, your lift pump is going out... Get one at Cummins where they are cheap, NOT at Dodge where they charge $399.

Ron-

Sorry to hear about your performance woes. I too have been dealing with the same problem, but thanks to Steve St. Laurent, President of the Great Lakes TDR, he has given me a lot of insight into the matter. I agree with Evan about the lift pump, but before you do any major repairs/replacements, purchase a fuel pressure gauge!!!! Steve and Tom Meers (briarhopper) have been helping me with the set-up and I'm sure will be more than happy to assist you also. After replacing the fuel filter 2X in the past 2months and checking for bad fuel and air leaks, I am pretty sure the lift pump is the culprit. But, I won't know for sure until the gauge goes in! Do a search regarding lift pumps and you will find a ton of stuff on the subject--especially a post by Steve regarding his pusher lift pump installation. Very informative.

Regards, Keith

I ordered the Pusher pump kit from Enterprise too after reading Steves posts and talking to ToolManTimTaylor. It SHOULD be here any day. I am not having problems now, but i dont want to wait till i do

Thanks for the info. Here's some more questions for anyone who knows answers to them: Shouldn't a new pump be covered by the warranty? And would doing the swap out myself void the warranty? And, would installing the pusher pump from enterprise void it as well?

The lift (transfer) pump is covered under the emissions warranty up to 100K miles. I had mine replaced about 20K miles ago and it works fine. 13 - 14 lbs normal, drops to 12 at WOT.

Tom

Is this lift pump problem Dodge or Cummins? and is it all that common... in other words, is it something I have to look forward to?

I don't know wether its a Dodge or a Cummins problem, but you might as well expect it. Those things just aren't made to last. You can get the "pusher pump" mentioned above that's supposed to remedy the problem.

Hey guys,

Lets go one step further... . sure it'd be nice if pump is covered under warranty, but if this is a chronic problem of the 24V, why the heck isn't there a recall on it? Geez, I didn't buy a Cummins to have the darn think start falling apart.
