I have a 00 3500 (bone-stock), auto trans, 127k miles. I had just pulled out of this parking lot, and onto a street, accelerating normally, 1st to 2nd shift normally, winding out second she just DIED, like someone just shut off the key. There were no trouble codes, not even a hint of trouble, just KWIT. The truck has been serviced regularly, used only Mopar/Cummin's filters. It was running perfectly until this.

My question is : How do I test to see whether or not the transfer pump is working? Additionally, if the trans. pump is bad, will it wipe out the injector pump? How do I test this (inj pump) ? Lastly, if the inj. pump is faulty, will it send trash to the injectors? and do these need changing/servicing? Any help will be appreciated, Really !'cuz now I am driving a Buick !! Help ! Sincerely, John (skf)

I have a 94 and haven't got under the hood of anything newer yet so I don't have all the answers but for lift pump don't they have a electrical LP ? ,have somene else work the key with the fuel line loose cycle the key and watch for fuel , if you have a fuel pressure gauge [range 0-50 ] tap into the system at the fuel filter on top, a small bolt, you should get more answers here soon, good luck.

Bump the starter, leave the ignition on and do not start. You should hear the faint sound of the lift pump running. It should run for 20 seconds. Chances are good that if it is original and has 127k on the pump, it has been dead for the last 100k.

Additionally, if the trans. pump is bad, will it wipe out the injector pump?

How do I test this (inj pump) ?

Yes, not having enough fuel volume and pressure to the pump will cause it to run dry, damaging the pump internals. You can test and see if the injection pump is working by listening one of the fuel lines at the head (19mm wrench) and have someone crank the motor. If fuel comes out of the line, then the pump is working. DO NOT check for fuel with your fingers, the fuel is pressurized to around 16,000 psi, just look, if it is coming out, then the injection pump is working.

Lastly, if the inj. pump is faulty, will it send trash to the injectors?

If the pump fails, they almost never explode, sending junk into the injectors.

Do these need changing/servicing?

No.

Any help will be appreciated, Really !'cuz now I am driving a Buick !! Help ! Sincerely, John (skf)

If the thing just quit, leaving no codes, I doubt it is the injection pump. Usually when they fail, you will get p0216, p1688, or p1689.

What will make your engine flat out quit and leave no evidence is a bad crank positioning sensor. When they fail, the engine will just quit and DTC codes are almost never set. So check out a CPS (they should be less than $80 from Cummins).

Mine just quit one day. Drifted to a stop on the sie of the road. It was the injection pump. I would almost bet it is your injection pump even wih no codes. Only need two things to run one of these, Fuel and compression. I doubt your copression is the issue. Crack one of the lines lose at the injectors, like number 4 and see if any fuel comes out. posible to get a big air leak and get her airbound so she won't run but she should have run rough first. The injector lin will be under HIGH PRESSURE< USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN CHECKING FOR LEAKS> WEAR A PAIR OF SAFETY GOGGLES AND USE CARDBOARD TO CHECK FOR THE LEAK. Sorry about yelling, cn't be too careful you know.

Good luck

First lift pump at 122000 km. Fuel gauge read just under 1/4 full. Pump sounded like it was working but no flow when I loosened the filter out line. Wrapped a rag around air nozzle and pushed air into tank, lots of fuel, change pump. 5000 km later, dead again(same read on fuel gauge)Tow to dealer this time. 2 days later (and $300) they replaced pickup tube in tank(I replaced pump,I've learned to keep a spare in the truck). 3000 km after that it died again (gauge read 3/8 this time). Cost me about $1200 dollars and aweek of down time to find out my gauge needed calibrating
