God bless the ACLU. They're at it again.

Pulled into one of my Battery dealers today. A small one man Body shop in Wagoner Oklahoma. Saw a frame there, along with various other crates and what not around. I asked him what the hell he was up to now... sure enough he is buidling a Helicopter!! Yes for a Mere 65K you can purchase a Helicopter Kit and build your own. Comes with a Fuel injected horizontaly opposed 4 cylinder. Its a small two seater design. I think he is nuts! I would never Fly anything that I built LOL. He said since he will be registered as the builder he will also be able to maitain it and not have a FAA or whatever shop do it. All he needs to do is get his license. I guess it would be pretty cool to have you own to fly around.

I have known and heard of too many people dying in kit airplanes. I can't imagine a kit helecopter. The disclaimers and warnings must be 1000 pages long. Can I buy life insurance on him? I suspect it's a better investment than the stock market.

FYI

I've been a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association for over 20 years and you are much safer flying in a homebuilt (kitbuilt, experimental) aircraft than you are driving, even in our CTDs.

An old saying is "the most dangerous part of flying is driving to and from the airport!!!!"

My tastes are toward more upscale aircraft... like Learjets and Challengers. In our business, an experimental airplane is when you pull the standard airworthiness certificate and hang an experminental ticket on it for a few days to test fly newly installed systems. Then we put the standard ticket back on it.

EAA and the homebuilts and war birds are cool. I've been to the EAA fly-in once and had a great time. The owners of a company I worked for (Kal Aero) in the 70's all won grand national chapionships with there war birds.

If my wife ever found out that I spent SIXTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS (!) on a helicopter KIT I would not live long enough to die in it!

While stationed in NC, a guy asked me to come out and take a look at a bird he was building. It was some old frame with a VW engine. Looked real nice, he replaced and rebuilt everything. The first time he fired it all up to test the rotar, the one thing he neglected to replace... the throttle cable... it was rusted and got jammed wide open throttle. He tried like heck to get it shut off before it started to float. I ran like a crazy man for the barn, he managed to rip the fuel line off before it left the ground, but it was too little-too late. It went up about 10 foot in the air, went sideways and crashed on its top, breaking everything on it. Luckily no one was hurt... well maybe his pride a little.
