Power Steering Pump/Hose Question

Just picked up a 1992 CTD Dodge, sold my last week 8 years ago, so back in the saddle!

The overdrive isn't hooked up, and I want to fix that, how does it work and how is it activated on this model? My 93 was a 5 speed, so don't know anything about it- is it like a button on the dash?

I believe first gens were a straight three speed with no lockup. Someone more educated will chime in I'm sure.

What island are you on?

'92's have the non lockup Auto OD trans, A518. Basically It's a planetary unit added onto the back of the venerable 727 3 speed. It's controlled by a computer that is in the engine compartment. There should be a control button in the dash panel under/ below the HVAC controls. I had a 92. It was a good truck.
looks like a nice rig. Good luck in getting it sorted out.

Same here not sure exactly on yours but I think its a 518 trans in those from what I found, either way my recommendation is to get the ATSG book for your trans, between that and the original Factory Service Manual, you cant go wrong. It shows how to troubleshoot a lot of common issues.

They have a pdf download version as well, sometimes you can find then less expensive on Amazon or Ebay.

Double check what you have in your truck of course.

91.5 and newer were all 518 non-lockup OD auto transmissions. It is basically a 2 wire setup, 12 volt to the solenoid and ground the circuit to activate it. That is where the east stuff ends. In order for the computer to tell OD to activate it needs a clean VSS signal from the transmission and a clean exact TPS reading, and a closed circuit from the trans temp sensor. Fixes for the problem vary from reconditioning the factory activation to a rheostat on the dash to a simple mystery switch.
