Happy Holidays!!

Question..... has anyone installed a Hellwig, rear anti sway bar?? It's supposed to be a bolt on item..... I'm not into drilling my frame.

I'm hoping to decrease the trucks roll with the camper on or hauling hay.

thanks!!

I had an aftermarket sway bar "made" years ago... I came to discover it was in fact a Hellwig...

Now the rocket scientist "suspension" company that did the install, we won't talk about but the sway bar... well it is a serious unit.

It required one hole to be drilled in the frame rail on each side.

The tuff part was the drivers side, because the bolts goes thru the frame rail right near the back of the fuel tank... . that means you gotta loosen the tank belly strap, pry the tank away from the rail and get yer fingers in there with a combo wrench to snug up the one bolt/nut.

Other than that, this thing is near 1" thick, maybe a tad more and is serious sturdy.....

I think my cost was about $300 Canadian for the unit.

sway bar

Check your framing, the holes may or may not be there, my truck is a 01 ST no camper package installed, but the holes for the sway bar are there from the factory. The hellwig is a heavy duty bar compared to the factory tooth pick. You can get them from JCWHITNEY for a excellent price.

Pastor Bob and others..... the Hellwig I ordered is 1 1/8" dia... should be stout (like a good dark beer). I got it from 4-wheel parts for $155 delivered. Did I get taken? Didn't check JC's catolog.

Now I'm nervous about even checking the frame rails until the part is delivered... . no reason to get depressed early (Prozac's all gone!!!)

Rich,

I installed a Hellwig sway bar on my 98. 5 (due to misinformation given by salesman for tow package), ordered it from JC Whitney.

I don't remember lowering the fuel tank though... I used a right angle drive drill. It's an easy install.

Does your truck have overload (helper) springs? If not, install a set of those too. Made a world of difference on my truck.

Note that JC Whitney stocks Hellwig antisway bars, but not the one (#7658) that fits the 11. 5 rear axle. If you specify your vehicle as a 2500, they will ship the one for the 10. 5 axle (#7651). You can guess how I discovered this...

I've put a Hellwig rear bar on a Caravan and tried to install front and rear Hellwig bars on a B van. The brackets for the B van were worse than laughable, returned it and got ADDCO stuff instead. The Hellwig bar for the Caravan was fine, the Hellwig helper spring for the front of my Chevy P-30 tool truck was fine. But I've also put 4 rear bars from ADDCO on Caravans since then and they've been fine.

You may find that when you get enough rear roll stiffness on your truck to reduce sway that it doesn't want to track in a straight line. If you run in to that problem, you need a bigger front bar for balance. Ran into that with a Winnebago on a Chevy chassis.
