Any So. Utah Members?

RHARVEY you have a "PM"

I'm always interested in opinions about this.

I'm a dirtbiker and wouldn't consider not wearing a helmet, chest protector, lower body protection pads and pants, knee braces and guards, elbow guards, kidney belt, boots, gloves and goggles.

I know they have helped minimize the damage because I have crashed a lot in the past 31 years I've been riding.

I'd say I have a 10% chance of crashing everytime I go riding and about a . 0001% or less chance of death.

A road bike rider has maybe a . 001% chance of crashing but more like 20% chance of death in that crash - way more without a helmet.

If you want to accept those odds for the freedom to feel the breeze then that's your choice.

It's all about analyzing and accepting risk. I'd jump a gap of 50' over a river if I liked the launch and landing but most people (whether you wear a helmet or not) would consider that ludicrous because they would not accept the risk because the results of something going wrong are pretty easy to figure out.

Most street accidents are caused by something out of the rider's control - animals, road conditions, other morons. These are the reasons I wear a helmet because even if I am an (alledgedly) expert rider, it's the rest of the world I ain't too sure about.

I'm all about risk education not laws, most people who are lucky enough to smack their melon and live have been sufficently educated to come to the conclusion that it makes good sense to wear a helmet, if they choose not to do then they have accepted that risk.

Just as you choose to speed, run stop signs, not lift the toilet seat for your SO, call your boss an ahole. Every action has a potential risk associated with it.

Good luck on your choices - I hope no one here who chooses to not wear a helmet pays for their choice as I wish no one harm, regardless of how you live your life - someone will miss you if you are gone.
