Ok dads 05 laramie 4x4 with a edge ez, afe filter is having a problem.

Comming back from a trip the truck was using alot of fuel, he said it started pinging. now it just knocks HARD and SMOKES white big time!!!! it will rev a little bit but doesnt have much power (found this out tring to load it on a deckover tandem dual trailer) The truck also has FUEL all over the bottom/sides/back of the truck. it was even dripping out of the muffler onto the trailer. It only throws a 0524 "oil pressure too low" code.....

Im thinking it might be a dropped injector but what would explain the amount of fuel on the outside of the motor? Hopefully its not to bad!!

Would a rail pressure gauge tipped off something happening before "destruction"?

THANKS guys!!!

Your crankcase is probably full of diesel.

I just went through a similar issue with an 03. Had to completely rebuild the engine. Best thing to do when something isn't exactly right is to stop driving. Probably would've saved several thousand dollars.

I think BJ is right, if your dad's truck is still stock get it into the dealer and go through the process of getting it fixed under warranty.

When asked about why he kept driving play stupid, they may fix it. Or they may come up with the 'you did harm by continuing to drive the truck story and deny the warranty claim.

GOOD LUCK!

steve

what would cause this though? he said it started nocking so he pulled over and thats where it sat. I just ran it to put it on and off the trailer. The dealership is good to us, small town and dads good with the owners. heck the truck came with all the mods already on it.

well hopefull;y this is a quick fix. Am I right on the injector theory? maybe a head gasket due to the smoke but im not sure?

thanks guys

i agree with everyone also, happened to a guy here, took out #4, with that much fuel you will get white smoke, popped a hole in the piston and bent a rod,

hope you get your dad's truck back up and running.

Not exactly sure what causes this. The injectors go bad on stock trucks and modded ones. I don't think it is mod related. The pinging and bad fuel mileage were probably from the injector taking a dump. The diesel all over everything was probably coming out the blowby tube. The knock you hear now is probably a rod from the oil being so diluted with diesel. These are all maybe's, but I feel it is going to be close. You can count on the engine having to come out.

BAD NEWS

I was at the dealership when they pulled it in the shop. took the valvecover off and 5 & 6 "bridges" (part that connects 2 springs) were completely off. the rest were loose and could almost come out by themselves (whole valvetrain). what would do this? mechanic wasnt certian what happened but he said it wasnt looking good. I had to leave for work just as they were going to pull the pushrods The crankcase was full of fuel, exhaust was full of fuel (muffler was leaking fuel onto the trailer)

AHHHhhhhh this sucks!!!!!

Thanks guys!!

Sounds to me like excessive wear in the engine from trying to lube engine parts with diesel fuel instead of oil. I'd push for a NEW engine, and use this one for a boat anchor.

I was talking to someone that said the fuel wasnt getting filtered well enough for the operating pressure of the HPCR system. Sounds like an aftermarket fuel pump with about 2-5micron filtering may be the ticket, but that is a modification, so you potentially void your warranty, depending on your dealer.

Daniel

Just what Daniel said. Lots of wear from diluted oil. Hope for a new engine. This one would really cost to rebuild. Lots and lots of parts to replace.

10-13-06 update

Truck is going back together, Turbo is SHOT! New innercooler is on its way from DC, the culprit was a cracked injector pouring the cyl full of fuel, Enough compression to push the fuel back out the intake resulting in a loose valvetrain, and fuel in the crankcase, innercooler, exhaust etc... I tried for a new motor but that was a no go, I also tried to get the old innercooler/injector/trubo but they are being sent back to STAR for investigation. innercooler should be in by monday, they are having the truck sent out to a detail shop to remove all the fuel on it!!.

Ian

I am curious too. I am betting it's hurt worse than the dealer is thinking, and the valvetrain is probably messed up because of a melted or ruined piston. That's happened before when an injector went bad, piston parts held the valves open, piston smacks it, breaks rocker arms & bridges.

IC Smoke, one thing to understand is when an injector fouls up on a 3rd Gen, it shoots tons of fuel everywhere because it's under constant pressure, unlike the jerk-pump system on your truck. Unfortunately when injectors have even minor problems it often results in catastrophic engine damage.

Vaughn

Wow. Eye opening stuff. After wondering about the problems I will face replacing the VP44, it's just another wear item. This calls into question the wisdom of this particular HPCR design. .

Never sell her now.

If I can get to mom/dads sometime Ill upload the scan of the work sheet. after the innercooler arrived they installed, started the truck and its running fine!!!! no odd noises/smells/vibrations. They kept the truck another day to make sure it was fine. valve lash check was fine. They are going to take the truck back in a week to make sure its ok, then check the truck periodically. yada yada yada dads bombing around in it now just as happy as ever. Id like to do a oil analysis (sp)

Hopefully its a 500,000 mile truck

Ian

CR motors gets a big thumbs up for helping us and putting it priority 1 on the repair list!!

they were going to change the oil each time it came in so I wont have to worry about it for now. Hopefully it will be a trouble free motor from here out. Id like to buy the truck off dad in a couple years when hes ready for a new one.

Im still wondering how it loosened the valvetrain though? any ideas?

Ian

IT DID IT AGAIN

THIS POS is about to go down the road #@$%! I noticed a small oil leak under the truck friday afternoon, so I red flagged it and called the dealer for a appointment. Saturday dad calls and says its SPEWING oil everywhere! so he brings it back to town and parks in in the drive. I check the oil and sure enough its over full!!!! Tuesday it went in and I called today since it was sitting outside... . turns out #5 Injector went bad WTF! the old man is thinking about a jeep now

why is this truck eating injectors?!?! we havent had a pressure box on it for almost a year (Edge EZ)
