2002 24V, On the first start of the day when the engine is cold, it surges at an idle. Not even enough to make a difference in the Tach, but you can easily hear it. About once every second and a half, it almost burps. I step on the gas for a couple of seconds and most of the time it goes away, but the second the engine even starts to warm up it goes away. Only at a cold idle this happens. Also, what is a lift pump? Oo.

Surging may be caused by a number of things I guess it just depends on mileage of truck. Mine surged at the tach when stock and now after bigger injectors it surges audibly but the tach is steady go figure!Check fuel filter if you havent all ready when dirty they can cause erratic idling. As for your lift pump it is a Carter canister style electric fuel pump mounted just behind and below your fuel filter housing on the side of the engine. They are there to "lift" fuel out of the tank to keep your vp44 injecttion pump primed and lubricated. These have caused many a sleepless night and headaches to Cummins owners since the beginning of their existance.

I thank you for educating me. I have been reading, should I buy and instal a fuel psi gauge? if so what kind and from where. Also, if any one else knows why it would be surging. it has 65k on her.

Sean, a fuel pressure guage is a must for these 98 to 02 trucks. Surging can be caused by a bad injection pump, but several things can cause it.

For guages try this site. GENO'S

A Poorly peforming injector can cause a rough idle. Also, a dying VP44 (Injection Pump) can be the source of a dying injection pump.

the surging may just be you intake heaters cycleing

Figgering you say it only does it when cold and at idle . when you can notice it

Watch your AMP gauge when it surges does the AMPs drop off ... then go right back up pretty quick ?? if so its your heaters working Absolutly normal

first off thank you all for the help. About the air intake heater, not that's not it. I am living in TN, and the past week it's been in the 90, and 80's. I know the AIH comes on 60 or 70 or something like that. So Pretty sure thats not it. Watching the amp gauge says the same thing. It's like a burp every second or so, with no tach indication. I will look into getting the fuel pressure gauge, is there a brand any one reccomends? Also, if I have a dieing VP44 how do I prove that to dodge, or should I say cummins? I am sure you all know dealers, 400 dollars for them to look at it, and then say it's fine. Once again thank you all for your help. LOVE this sight. As I am new to it.

I know the AIH comes on 60 or 70 or something like that

its your word

We just call them Intake Heaters

And if your Amps are not bouncing then its not whats going on.

With no RPM change

Then IMO that would rule alot of stuff out.

The intake heaters cycle Even when its warm out till the motor gets up to temp.

Check your batteries And make sure there good

I have checked the batt's, seems to be fine. I tried it again today, cold engine, about 77 degrees outside, of which it's located. Did the same thing, and I quickly put it in gear with the break on, and it got worse, then I saw an RPM jump. Once again, I thank all of you for the help. Sean

Bill,

The volt meter- here in TN it's been about almost 80 every day, the volt meter doesn't do what it usually does and that is the AIH jump from about 14. 5 to 11 or so, then right back to 14. 5. The tach really doesn't move either. Now all of this is happening while in Park. If I put it in gear, it gets worse. Then I see the tack jump about 50 or 100 rpms just for a second. And it's a perfect cycle when it's doing this, once every 1. 5 seconds. And the duration of the stumble in the motor is a faction of a second. Very audiable though. The whole thing only lasts about one min. then it's gone for the rest of the time the truck is above about 120 in temp.

I so plan on getting gauges. Thank you for the link by the way…. . Here is where I am at so far, not sure if this is going to help any one, but like an idiot, I never check for codes. I had three. 0500 no speed sensor, 1693 of which I have no idea and a 0216 of which is injector mistiming. I have 69K on the rig, so back for warranty. I did fix the speed sensor problem just by moving around the connectors on the transmission. Does any one know what a 1693 is? Any more thoughts on this while problem of mine? Thank you again for all who took the time to help me.
