 Interesting that you say the engine will turn over although the cam isn't turning. I'd think that with the cam not turning that a piston would contact an open valve and bring things to a stop. Well, looks like you'll be removing the timing cover..... I'm very interested to hear about what you find. May want to see about getting a bore scope down the injector holes to check out the cylinders.

Guys:

Can the KDP strike without breaking the front timing case? I was thinking of the same thing. I won't get to work on it till this coming weekend. I'll keep you posted on what's going on. I'm afraid that parts for this rig will get expensive real quick. So... if the cam will not turn then the gear is broke off of the front of the cam?

I do not know.

It is possible that the cam isn't broken. There is a keyway on the crank gear. It is probably a 1/4" square key. If something bound up, like the kdp coming out, or the oil pump locking up. It could shear this key. If this happend then you would have the same problems show up during your troubleshooting. I hope it s something easy and cheap to fix.

When I was in the process of bleeding the injectors, the oil pressure gauge built pressure and went up to the middle of the gauge(normal range). I guess there is no way to tell until i get it apart (Thursday or Friday). I don't believe that the oil pump has any troubles. The oil is full and the gauges never moved when this happened. I'm just wondering WHAT could cause the front of that engine to bind, you know? I mean that keys and shear pins don't just break for no apparent reason. Wasn't there also trouble on these engines with the cam bolts backing off (behind the cam gear that holds the cam in)? I hope I don't have to replace the cam:mad:

thanks guys,

John

If you were building oil pressure while cranking. Then that narrows it down to the camshaft area.

There is a cam retainer plate with bolts in it. I haven't heard about them backing off. But you never know. Just have to wait and see when you get into it.

Well guys:

I tore into it today... It looks like the cam is broke around the nose area. I could wiggle the camshaft gear and there was movement. The KDP is in it's place(It is located between the cam gear and injection pump gear isn't it?) The bolts that hold the case to the block seemed loose. I saw one and it was finger tight:rolleyes: I don't know what exactly caused the engine to quit running.

I think I'm going to sell it the way it is. I think the engine can be rebuilt but can't guarantee it. It has a new injection pump, new ADT injectors, new Cummins transfer pump, and about 8,000 miles on new Dayton timberline tires. It is a 5 speed 4wd regular cab, body in good condition, no rust. Both hitches, electric brake controller, air, cruise, tilt wheel, aftermarket wheels, and aluminum toolbox, 197,000 miles with rotella t and fleetguard filters at every 5,000 miles. How much do you guys think I can get out of it? It outta be worth $3500-$4000 shouldn't it? It would make a cheap truck to someone with a spare motor or wants to rebuild one to make a puller; or a daily driver for that matter. What I'm insinuating is that this truck IS TOO GOOD to part out. I'd appreciate any comments.

Guys:

It seems the cam is broke, I believe the engine is rebuildable, but cannot guarantee it. What is it worth in this condition? It's a 1992 regular cab, 5 speed, 4wd, 198,000 miles, both hitches, electric brakes, air, cruise, tilt, aluminum wheels. It's not a junker or a parter outer by any means. Body has two very minute dings and no rust. It would be an ideal truck for someone who really had the time/money to fix it or has a spare engine laying around. I'd appreciate your comments!

John

I was hoping for something cheap had let go. Broken cam.

I would at least price out what it would cost to replace the cam, or have someone esle do it. You know that truck. The one you would get to replace it. If it is used you will not know anything about.

In my area a diesel pickup not running does not bring much at all. The last one I saw for sale was a 92 with a broken front axle. It was rough $1250. Before that was a 91 with a bad rear axle. $2500. With a dead engine it is going to hurt you bad on selling it.

The KDP is located over by the fan mounting area. Where the case makes a turn under the fan. It is located in the turn area.
