Trying to figure out why a 98 24valve will start and run perfect, but if you ever turn the engine off it will not start again unless you let it cool off for hours. Does not smoke when cranking. Some say the pump is shot, want to see if anyone has any other ideas before it gets replaced.

I have heard of this once. It turned out to be a bad pump (I am assuming an ISB) caused by a bad lift pump. Check the lift pump pressures. That would give you a start. An easy and quick way to do this is to get a fuel pressure gauge (cheap one will work) and connect it to the filter drain on the filter housing. It doesn't need to be permanent (clamp it so no leaks). Open the valve and voila. Let us know what you find out.

Also I think there is a TSB on the subject. But I cannot remember what it is. Let us know how it works out.

I'm sure the injection pump is shot too. I have personally seen this same senario. Take it in to have a scanner plugged in to see if any misfire or timing trouble codes comes up.

Are you sure it doesn't puff white smoke while warm cranking?

When I got my Truck (from my Dad) I had 1 pound if fuel pressure with a full tank of fuel (at 74K miles). I had this replaced under the 100K Engine warranty. (Lift Pump)

Two months later my Truck was taking two or three "cranks" for the engine to run when it was warm, it also gave off a nice, blueish-whiteish smoke instead of the usual black smoke when started.

Half-way through my second month of ownership, I went out to my truck, cranked it up, It ran fine. reversed outta my Driveway, and when I started going down my neighborhood, at 1,200 RPM the truck started miss-firing, (I was FREAKED OUT)(Sounded like Bad spark plugs, especially with my 3" Straight pipe), so I kicked it in Neutral and floored the truck, well I only got about 2,000 RPMS and I looked out my rearview mirror and LO-AND-BEHOLD It looked like somebody was having a cook-out in the back of my truck,,, Blue-White, Charcoal Smelling smoke was just COVERING the street, and anything else within about 40 Feet of the rear of my truck.

I went to the Dealer, and I said,, I think I have a problem.

After a MILLION Years of troubleshooting (3 Days) They said Injection pump was bad, so they replaced and installed it for free (100K warranty) and gave my truck back to me with a Smile.

Now I have 76K on the truck, a New Lift Pump, New Injection pump, and a New TPS, and I couldn't be much Happier.

That's just my Story, I love talking about my truck, Since I don't have any POWER BOMBS yet :)

Thanks

I am troubleshooting for a friend of mine. He said there was no smoke during cranking. He has hooked it up to a code reader and it is showing no problems at all. (Not sure what kind of diagnostic machine or how current it is. ) The truck has 175,000 miles on it, and it has wire taps where some kind of box was hooked up. I am pretty sure the pump is gone, just wanted to make sure before I tell him to put a new one on. Also, anyone know a good source for new or rebuilt pumps?

Thanks for the help.

There is a TSB for "hard or no start when engine hot". I would check Dave Fritz's website (in the member pages section) for more info. A good friend of mine had this problem and the reflash fixxed it.

I know this sounds strange, but when was the fuel filter last changed? It happened to me and it was a filter getting plugged. The lift pump would run on its long cycle. It starves for fuel and after sitting for a while the fuel will get through the filter and will start up fine. How does it run once it starts? If it runs fine then it most likly the pump. This happened to me and after I paid good money for the lift pump then injector pump, Reno Dodge missdiagnosised it, it still did the same thing. I replaced the fuel filter and no more problems.

Chace,

Yes, like JR2 said, check TSB 18-015-00, have a 2001, and had similar thing: After warm running, shut off engine and it didn't crank right up on restart. Had Dodge do the TSB and no more problem. Only difference, I only noticed problem on immediate (within ~10 minutes) restart, not hours as you state.
