Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Help ? About Starter

Today when I turned off my truck I noticed that the truck ran for a second or 2 before it shut off after I turned the key off. Is that the starter contacts that are causing this? If so does Larry B's have the best price and is there anything else I should replace while I'm in there. What's the easiest way to get the top 10mm 12 point bolt out of the starter. Any help would be appriciated. Pete

I bet your shutdown solenoid is sticking. Check the rubber boot that isolates the plunger from the elements. If its intact, you should pull out the plunger and clean the bore/plunger with light grease and a rag. The rubber boot should snap off the housing, be careful not to rip it. If its broken, etc. . you need to clean it, and get a new boot from fostertruck.com.



If you have over 100k on your truck, I would change the contacts. This was the second thing I did on my truck when I got it, other than change out some fuel hose that was leaking pretty bad.



I have a long 10mm offset box wrench that worked like magic on mine, the whole job took a little over an hour. (got the wrench at sears for 9. 50). Theres a lot of other 10mm on this truck also.

I would also clean and check the battery cables if they are corroded or burnt (discolored)

where the wire goes into them replace them they are robbing you of voltage needed to run the shut of solonoid and increasing the load on the starter causing an overload of the start relay. good luck

my 96 cost me a starter relay and solenoid and fuel cut off solenoid about 2 weeks after I got it parts were about 900 bucks

holy crap whale dog. . did you goto the *ealer for these parts? A solenoid can be had for around 200 and the relay is 20. (see fostertruck.com) Was it the install that killed ya?
