Help - my air filter assembly is loose - but I can't seem to get the thin tight - what's the story on the 'bolts?" There is no way to get at the bolts on them - surely one doesn't have to take off th efender liner?????
The box should be a little loose. It has rubber grommets that cushion it against the fender well. Other than that, they are like a brass stud that is pressed into the fender. Then the box is held down buy the nuts inside the box. And yes, the brass fittings can come loose in the fender. Mine has.
If it's real loose you may be missing some parts. It will have some normal movement when it's on correctly.
There are three plastic posts that fit into the bottom of the air box. These plastic posts screw onto three metal studs. There are also three plastic sockets in the bottom of the box. When you remove the box by pulling up on it there should be three black plastic posts on the fender well and three black plastic sockets in the bottom of the air box. One or more posts may pull off the studs and remain in the bottom of the air box so if you have any bare studs look in the bottom of the air box for the posts. If all of the parts are there then the loosness is normal unless one or more of the metal studs is loose. If any of these items are missing then you need to take a trip to the Dodge parts counter. If they are all there and some of the posts come off with the air box then they are stripped and need replacing. After I had a few go rounds with these things I found that if I lubed the posts and sockets with Silglide from NAPA the posts stayed on the studs like they should.
Take the air filter out, you will see three little thumbscrews. They may be loose, or stripped. You have to take the airfilter out of the airbox to get to them.
I believe the pieces you are talking about being loose are the metal studs on the fender liner itself. If this is correct they are available through the dealer. If you know what a riv nut is. . /these are very similar in how they attach but have a stud instead of the female threads. Once you get the new part in your hand it will make a lot more sense.
I tried to push the one down and she won't go tight. I can pull her up maybe 1/2 inch - but teh other 2 hold OK. Don't know why they just didn't attach this through the fender and liner..... I'll get some of those plastic "pins" and the suggestion for the Silglide from NAPA... .
