has anybody had problems w/ the 70

looks like the spider cross thingy is bad,

not sure if the axles are bad

truck is sitting need help wednesday 01292003

I'm pretty sure you will need to make modifications to the spring hangers and the shock mounts too. Our trucks have the lower shock mount on one side of the axle tube, the rear. On the Dana 80 mounts, they have one forward and one rear.

You will likely have a different pinion as well.

I'd luv to find a set of Dana 70 3:54's LSD myself. .

Bob.

Dana 70 swappin'??

... guys,

My 93 has a D70/3. 54 LSD/ABS, all fresh 3K miles ago, and I'd like to have a dually rear, 70 or 80, LSD or not, but need 3. 54's. I live 3 hrs North of LA.

Possible swaps??? It's all good with me. ;)

how's about a 60?

... wait a minute...

- will a D60 hold up to a mildly bombed CTD? It's held up fine behind my big block, and it makes mucho torque. Thoughts?

I'm almost 100% sure you can bolt up a Dana 70 or 80 out of a 3/4 ton truck to the dually or vice vs---but to do the one ton axles to a 3/4 ton truck you will need a wheel spacer to get the wheel to align in the right spot and to put the 3/4 ton axle in a one ton truck you will only be able to use one wheel-not two(well maybe two but they will stick out past the fenders, I believe)---I took a bunch of measurements when I broke the 70 in my 3/4 ton truck and replaced it with a 3/4 ton 80, I looked into replacing it with a one ton 80--spring pads line up---but just for grins I'd take a lot of measurements to make sure I had it figured right---the one ton 80 axles are 4-5" shorter than the 70 axles to allow for the two extra wheels--hope this helps ya Bill---chris

Bill--I'd take the measurements to be extra sure--I just remembered your truck is a 1st Gen and mine is a 99 24v--4x4--chris

A 60 series would be border line to say the least. The axle tubes are thinner. The spiders are weaker. (I wish I had a pic of the inside of my front cover to show you the scars from a set of spiders that someone blew apart).

On the first gen trucks. Measuring from brake backing plate mounting flange to oppsite mounting flange.

single tire>>>>>>51"

cab and chassis >>56"

dually>>>>>>>>>59"

These lenghts are within an inch or so. I went threw this a couple of years ago when I had to replace a bent model 70 axle housing. Here is a pic. Just think of a 60 series now.

If you had a set of 3:08's in a cab and chassis axle. I would have talked to you about a swap.

Hmmm, gear ratios.....

Philif, fellas,

I got a question - Since I've been a TDR member I have seen an interesting trend towards the airplane gear ratios (3:45's and 3:08's) verses the drag gears (4:10's, 3:91's), and that sort of goes against the usual logic for a bunch of tow crazy folks like us.

My 93 had grenaded it's 4:10's, and I like to have some legs on the highway, so I had a fresh set of Dana 3:45's installed when the rebuild on my D70 was done. It looks like some of yous even want the 3:08's.

Now..... back in the day of the 426 Hemi..... the old proverb was "it just don't matter what gears are behind a Hemi - it'll roast the tires either way". Now, is this the same reason for the trend towards highway gears in our CTD's? Because of the engine's efficiency, low end power, and low reving RPMage, that it just doesn't need the big gears to do the job?

On that note, when I convert my A-518 to a NV4500, I'm considering bolting on a Gear Vendors overdrive, which would put my rpm at about 1700-1800 while doing 70 mph (providing the tack was calibrated correctly). I sit right at 2000 rpm even when I'm going 70 mph, with a 235 85/16 tire. Does that all sound about right?

Woah, I wrote a book - but inquiring minds just GOTTA know...

Thanks,

- Sam

Mine has the 3:08's as you can see in my sig. If you run around empty or tow with a light load they are good gears. If you are going to pull 8k (my max choice for load with these gears) and up. If you are running in big hill country. You better be cranked up. The stock motor doesn't pull that good with the 3:08's. Top speed on mine with a 7k load is 75 mph on flat ground. That is flat out on the floor.

If you run around empty or up to 8k loaded. The 3:08's are good gears.

If you tow over 8k then better go lower on gears 3:54's.

If you tow over 15K I would think of a set of 3:73's or 4:10's

The above suggestions are just my thoughts only.

I forgot to add. Some of us didn't have a choice on the gears we have. I would have liked a set of 3:54's myself. But I can't afford to replace both axles at once.
